Hi Maggi

Thank you so very much for posting this link.  8)  8)  8)  8)  8)  When I read the mission statement on the Plant Heritage – National Plant Collection web site I felt like I found something that I truly believe in, have passion, and can support. Stewardship for future generations – stewardship of genetic diversity for cultural, medical, culinary and aesthetic use is absolutely the underlying driving force and inspiration behind our garden. I will be looking into this much more. Maybe there is a miracle and something similar exists in the U.S.A. This is something I will be exploring too.
Thank you again.

"A garden for all to enjoy; a garden in which to learn"

Snowdrop Festival 2024
By Pat Eaton for The Garden House.

The Garden House is the custodian of significant collections of Galanthus.  First introduced by Keith Wiley and Matt Bishop, with the more recent legacy of Colin Mason’s collection which was moved from Warwickshire by head gardener Nick Haworth and David Milburn in 2020. This collection widened the gene pool significantly. One of the more challenging aspects was to work out the correct placing of some of the rarely cultivated species. This has proved to be an experimental challenge.

The species Galanthus reginae olgae, flowering here, as they do in the Mediterranean in September, have appreciated full sun and good drainage.  The flowering takes place before the leaves emerge.
G. reginae olgae Subsp.r.o. prefer some dappled shade and tend to flower slightly later from October to December, when in leaf.

Galanthus peshmenii, also autumn flowering, from small pockets of the Turkish mainland, has proved much more challenging, flowering October to November, disliking high temperatures and wet or cold conditions. We have tried to grow it in an alpine plunge bed under protection. Last autumn Galanthus peshmenii ‘Green Flight’ bulked up quite well and flowered most attractively.

Galanthus platyphyllus, from the Caucasus, is a snow melt plant, with wide glossy leaves, preferring damp sunny alpine meadows, has proved difficult. Flowering well in its first two quite wet springs here, the very dry spring of last year was a very disappointing ‘no show’. Another bulb planted in damp shade produces leaves, but no flower.

Galanthus krasnovii from N.E Turkey and the Black Sea coastal regions, also having broad glossy leaves, and similar in flower to Galanthus platyphyllus, flowered for the first time following the move, last March.

The Colin Mason Collection also contains significant colonies of Galanthus ikariae, G. rizehensis, and G. lagodechianus. Generally these have settled well, and are bulking up.

Right snowdrop, right place is certainly important for success.
Galanthus woronowii thrives best in damp semi shade, with its green glossy leaves, whereas Galanthus elwessiii, specially the Autumn flowering clones, appear to do best in good light.

As well as the species groups and drifts the collections at The Garden House contains over 500 different named cultivars.  These include G. elwesii varieties ‘Fly Fishing’, ‘Smaragdsplitter’, ‘Godfrey Owen’; viridescent G. ‘Rosemary Burnham’ and ‘Andrea’s Fault’, G. x ‘Fieldgate Sophie’, ‘Franz Josef’, ‘Long John Silver’, ‘Blewbury Tart’; G. plicatus ‘Madelaine’ and ‘Blue Trym’: G.woronowii ‘Elizabeth Harrison’, double ‘Ophelia’and the unusual G.nivalis (Poculiformis Group) ‘Angelique’ among many others.

The Snowdrop Festival opens of 12th January with free entry for RHS members. Specialist West Country Nurseries will be selling plants (see website for dates and details www.thegardenhouse.org.uk or Galanthusuk).
