October 2024 in the Southern Hemisphere

October is in full swing with many of the South African bulbs coming into bloom.
Here are a few things from the garden:
1 & 2) Pelargonium triste
3 & 4) Moraea villosa? or is it M. aristata?
5) a Sparaxis variety

This bluebell has appeared in a bed away from all the other bluebells which are all the Spanish or the hybrids.
Could it possibly be the "true" British Bluebell with its drooping inflorescence?

2) Daviesia schwarzenegger (yes, named after Arnie!)

I used to have the same problem when I was younger- not an issue now I'm nearly hurricane-proof!

A lot of Cape Bulbs are suited to our climate so mostly don't need any special attention.
Here are a few Pacific Coast Iris:
1)  PCI which might the one named 'Sahara Sunset' from Heidi Blyth
2)  purple seedling PCI
3) white seedling PCI (this might be from Diane W in Canada)
4) another of Heidi's PCI
5) Another one of Heidi's - maybe Sahara Sands but it may have been unnamed.

PCI's do well here, very hardy and now there is a huge range of colours and some with excellent flower shape well away from the more spikey species that they were derived from.
