Scottish Botanists Conference 2024 - 2 November
« on: October 22, 2024, 10:19:42 AM »
The Scottish Botanists Conference  is to be held on 2 November 2024 at RBG Edinburgh.

The conference is open to anyone with an interest in the flora of Scotland. The SRGC will, for the first time, have a stand at the event to promote especially the valuable work that we do under the aegis of the Diane Aitchison Fund (training and development of horticulturalists) and our Exploration Awards. Additionally, we will promote our Free SRGC Membership offer to students.

At the conference there will be a wide range of talks, including on conservation initiatives for threatened species such as Small Cow-wheat and One-flowered Wintergreen, a year in the life of a mountain botanist [this may be of particular interest and relevance to SRGC members], a look at invasive species in Scotland including Rhododendron and Giant Hogweed, flash talks from student researchers, and annual updates from the BSBI and Botanical Society of Scotland.

Ever-popular mini-workshops will also be running, with topics including Eyebright identification, ferns for beginners, an introduction to Bramble identification, an introduction to Sphagnum bog-mosses, getting the most out of your smartphone for plant photography, how to use the new BSBI recording app, and an introduction to using the BSBI’s plant distribution database. There will also be an opportunity for a guided tour of the Herbarium.

There are also stands from a range of organisations plus informative posters (research projects, interesting finds, photographic displays) from amateur and professional botanists.

Summerfield Books https://www.summerfieldbooks.com/ will have a comprehensive pop-up shop
