If you right click on the shortcut, select properties, short cut tab, look at Run: it offers a choice of window which sounds like it should do what you want.

Thanks David and Martin. Have tried to do what David suggested but have only two tabs "General" and "Web Document"?? ???

David, are you referring to a shortcut to a website ( URL) or a shortcut to something on your computer?
If you have a shortcut to a folder on your computer and right click and select properties you will get different tabs, including a shortcut tab with run with a dropdown that lets you select normal window, minimized or maximized.
Although I have vista not xp.

Helen, in this case it's a shortcut to a Web page.

David, for a shortcut to a webpage I get the same tabs as you, plus a security and a details tab.

If this has only just started to happen, maybe cleaning up your temp files might help. ???

This sounds a bit like the old problem of the default window size in IE, which is set by holding down control when you close an IE window.

I was going to say is a short cut anything special or does the same thing happen when anything causes a new window to open.

David, so it happens when you already have a window open with internet explorer then you try to open another with IE? That sounds like the problem I mentioned earlier, whereby Windows opens subsequent windows in the same program as smaller windows, not full screen. It just seems to be something that Windows does, curse its black little soul.

We are not. Hearing too many with problems.... we think we'll wait till the system has had the kinks ironed out!

I am still being plagued by this interminable delay ( getting longer, too, sometimes fifteen seconds or more) in between key strokes when I'm posting. It will let me continue normally until I hit reurn or need to move the cursor to make a correction, for example.... then everything stops for an age until "it" finally allows me to start again.  This is driving me crazy! I have asked all sorts of folk  for help but no luck so far. Graeme Strachan suggested a system restore  to a point before this began but I cannot remember when it all started!!  Can anyone help me??!!!!

pc is pretty chock full, I admit! Taking a lot off onto new external drive soon. But no problem when using Word etc, just when typing into forum posts or when searching/typing for searches. I was aware one day of clicking a box which appeared when I had been holding down one key for too long (  either ctrl of somesuch) when I was thinking about what I wanted to say and I just clicked this box without paying too much attention, only to realise as I did so that it was saying something about adjusting keystrokes and eight seconds etc! I'm sure that's where the trouble started but I'm dammned if I can get the box back or find the source. Robin gave me a link which she thought might help but I haven't found a solution there. Or I least, I thoguht I hadn't.... but now things seem better. Holy moly! I think it's fixed ..... Robin's link was about changes in control panel languages area and though I couldn't find the actual part mentioned, I did make minor changes, removing US English setting, and problem seems fixed!
Good grief! If I were of a religious  persuasion I'd praise the Lord.... but in this instance, Robin will suffice! Thanks, Robin!!  :-* :-* :-*

I've been using Internet Explorer 8 for a few months - there's nothing to be scared of, but then again no compelling reason to upgrade.

Maggi - have a look at Start -> Control Panel -> Accessibility Options.

At least if you think you've turned them on, the above will let you turn them off.
