Roland, in this Forum if you click on the "Notify" button  you will get a box that offers you the choice to notify or disable notification of the topic.  As you say, there is no change to the menu at the top of each page. We have no plans to try to alter that!

I know what you meant Roland. Iwas just saying that our forum is a little different and how our one worked, in case anyone else did not know.

you see direct if you are notified or not without clicking
and thought it was a improvement if it was possible here

I've got this really crazy problem where my screen loses all the red tints, goes off and on.  Is it the flat screen I've got or something else?  Any ideas most welcome.

Any chance of using another monitor or computer (or lead) to isolate which end is causing the problem.

It can be that both the computer and monitor offer an analogue connection as well as a digital DVI one, if you're lucky you get both leads and can change to the other system.

I'll check this out Dave.  Thanks.  Not sure if I have a cable the same or not, but I know someone who might.  But on the whole I reckon I'd better invest in a new monitor, this one was given to me by a friend some time ago.

Dave,  I just found out, after spending £80 (ouch) on the new monitor, that the port or (whatever its called that the monitor plugs into) is faulty.  Switched to the other port and hey presto, I've got red colour again.  Isn't it amazing!  Guess I'll keep the old monitor just in case.

Sorry to hear that, it's how it goes, I've still not got over buying a new TV and then working out what was wrong with the old one.

And now I realise that all the new monitors are wide screen and my graphics card doesn't support that format, so I'm back to the old monitor.  Am in the throes of returning the monitor I bought, hoping to get my money back.   What a fiasco.

Thinking about changing my computer, like me, this one is getting past it's sell-by date.

Present spec. Pentium 4. CPU 3.06GHz. RAM 440Kb (not that I really understand all that) but I do know it's pretty slow.

Present Broadband connection-allegedly upto 5mbps on ADSL which I think is the current maximum I can get on our exchange. At 8.30PM I did a speed test and was getting Download: 0.38Mbps, Upload: 0.39Mbps. Again , sounds like I know what I'm talking about!

I shall go for a lap top to give me a bit more flexibility (the best I can get for the cash I shall have available probably from PC World). Would like a Mac but can't afford it. Thing is it will be wireless ready (my current computer isn't) and I intend to try to screw a free router out of Virgin Media. Am I likely to have a speedier connection than through the current ADSL line-I don't understand the processes at all?

The A in ADSL stands for Asymmetric, download is supposed to be much faster than upload. Not much sign of that above. But 8.30 PM is probably when all your neighbours with whom you are sharing bandwidth are busy using the web.

I find the screen on my lappie is not as good as on the desktop machine, makes judging photos difficult. It's also not as easy to type on, and after 18 months one key is starting to stick and I presume this means a new computer. OTOH the laptop is wonderfully convenient. Battery life is a joke, it's really a portable computer.

You can stick Linux on any new machine - I'm finding Google Chrome plus Linux quite usable. Gets away from the horrors of Windows.

I believe wire has more bandwidth than wireless, but at the connection speed you mention above there's not going to be any problem. If all your neighbours are on wireless you can probably tap into their faster connections 8-)

David - save your pennies & buy a Mac. I think I've said this before!
Incidentally, I'm lucky to get 0.5Mbps irrespective of the time of day - so much for 'Digital Britain'. BT accepts no responsibility. However,  my ISP (Namesco) is quite attentive & gave me a free router when the old one began to misbehave.
