Can anyone give me some advice on resizing pictures for the forum. I was managing alright and then my computer broke. My husband bought me a macbook, it was nice of him but I would have been happier with what I had before.

Some advice please. The simpler the better for me.

Angie - if your Macbook has iPhoto use that. It is very simple.

iPhoto is simple, but only if you know the correct procedure.
Highlight your chosen image and press Export under File.
The File Export should be highlighted at the top of the window that opens.
Open Custom window under Size.
Max width or Max height to suit landscape or portrait.
Export.
Another box will open asking Save As and Where?
Enter details and press OK.

Angie & Cliff - I don't know how much versions of iPhoto differ. Mine is 5.0.1. For this version  Cliff's instructions need to be modified slightly:
Open iPhoto
Select 'Add to Library' from drop down 'File' menu & choose your image
Highlight your chosen image and press 'Share' from top menu; then choose 'Export'
Then follow Cliff's instructions.

I keep getting a worrying message whenever I try to switch off my lap-top.  I thought it was because I was very close to my memory limit and so I down/up/loaded? some pictures to a separate hard drive and now I have 10gb of free memory but it still keeps coming up.

 I don't have a resident or local computer guru 'cos nothing has gone wrong before.  Any help from forumists would be greatly appreciated.

I should also add that most of the language in this message is gobbledygook to me as I am only semi-computer literate.

Shelagh, a bit of digging suggests this is associated with McAfee antivirus software. Do you use it?

The solutions I've seen aren't very helpful but the following low risk options might be worth a try.
1) run CHKDSK to see if there are damaged files on your hard disk (just don't ask me where you'll find it on your machine)
2) uninstall and reinstall McAfee
3) phone McAfee technical Support (internet suggests they have a solution they can talk you through.)

Shelagh - mfehidk.sys - suggests a McFee problem - I would uninstall McFee and down load AVG free it is a much better antivirus system and as it says free. We have used it for years and most PC literate people we know prefer it over the other main names.

If you do this run an anti virus scan with AVG just in case as some malware does disguise itself as mfehidk.sys - another good reason to go over to AVG.

Back up all your data before doing this just to be on the safe side - you will have no problems with AVG.

The first thing I do when I get a new computer is to uninstall McAfee which for some reason  always seems to be  loaded and install AVG. Never had a problem with AVG

Have uninstalled McFee and installed AVG. Tried to find DSKCHK but to no avail.  Got ARO which I didn't want and uninstalled that, it seemed to piggy back on AVG.

Sooo fingers and everything else crossed I hope it now works properly.

Shelagh, here is a link that explains how to access the "Check Disk" function in Windows 7, analogous to the old DOS CHKDSK function.

Regarding uninstalling McAfee Antivirus and going with AVG, I can endorse such an action, AVG is very good, although I must say, the free version, which I have used for years, pales in comparison to the pay-for version. The ~$50 a year I pay for it is well worth the small investment.  The purchased version has extensively increased protection for things like internet web surfacing, URL checking, and "rootkits"... one of the more insidious virus types.  Finally, my daughter's computers have remained virus-free now using the purchased version.

Well Gentlemen I have done everything as instructed.  All scans by AVG and DiscCheck say there are no problems BUT I am still getting the same message whenever I try to switch off.  So I guess I will just leave it switched on but put it to sleep instead.

Shelagh do you ever do disc cleanup to free space on the hard drive?

McAfee sometimes behaves like a virus itself and is often not completely unistalled by the add/remove of Windows. Try to run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool too after the unistall. This comes from the McAfee community forum:


1. Uninstall all McAfee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel".

2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS100507. This will remove all McAfee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool)

3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\<user>\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
In Vista: C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming
If you can't find these files don't worry. It just means that MCPR has done its job

Pascal, I think your advice is sound.... I remember a long time ago we had the devil of a job to rid a pc of ALL the macafee files that were lurking after we uninstalled it!

Hi,

Presumably McAfee is fingered by the file 'mfehidk.sys' in the BSOD (blue screen of death).

I would be inclined to locate this on disc and then rename it. Windows search should find it, as long as you tell it to look in system files etc. The other plan would be to locate it in the registry and remove the entries. However if you uninstall McAfee there should be no need for this, and it is a bit beyond what mere users should have to do.

Plan B would be to talk to McAfee, since they seem to have got you into this mess, they should be keen to get you out of it.
