We DID have manual viruses - or nearly so.
They came in the form of E-mail messages warning for a super virus. The only way to save the hard disk would be immediately to shut down the computer - preferably by pulling the cord and send the mail on to all friends (With a shut down computer???).
The mail came with various claims which even a computer novice would realize were impossible.
I received it twice.

Gote,

You remind me of a story from a friend in a computer telephone service. He was in a supervisory capacity and had the benefit of being able to listen to a recorded session between a caller and one of the service advisors.

The caller asked for help as there was no picture on the monitor.
She was asked to check if she had both the processor and monitor switched on.
After much explanations about which buttons and where they were: Yes.
Then to check if the lead between monitor and processor was in place.
More explanations - Yes.
Is the computer plugged in?
Can't see.
Why?
It's dark.
Can you turn on a light?
No
Why?
We have no electricity.
Have you the boxes in which the computer was delivered?
Yes.
You will have to put the computer back in the box.
OK
Then bring it back to the shop.
And what will I say to them at the shop?
Tell them that you are returning the computer as you are too f...ing stupid to have one.

May I request that if you wish to contact me over the next few weeks then would you PLEASE USE THE PERSONAL MESSAGE SERVICE ON THIS FORUM as my AOL mail service has been hijacked by a particularly virulent 'Paramount Holidays' request form that will allow all outgoing mail but prevents the reading of all incoming mail.  Does anyone have any experience of this amazingly frustrating e-mail virus?
Any assistance would be MUCH appreciated ... they have finally found a way to attack Mac computers and I have been infected.  Maggi, I will get back to you as soon as possible.

My sympathies to you over this pooter problem, Cliff.... I would hope that some of the nice boffins that frequent the forum may have words of help for you.
On an entirely frivolous note.... does the virus still allow you out to the pub?  :-\

Help !!!  :'( :'( :'(

Untill recently I had no trouble posting photos on the forum, although I did have to turn down the quality settings on the camera to about mid-way.
Now ,even trying to post just one photo I keep getting the message that the file is too large.
One such photo is the Pleione on my profile, but it loaded to this OK  ???
Any ideas ?

Can't think what the problem may be , Eric. The forum posting file size has been increased  to allow leeway so there should be no difficulty  that way. :-\   ???

The camera I use is only 1.3 m pixels but Ian uses ones with several million pixels and takes at pretty high quality resolution.... but he compresses the files to  "fit" .... we use the ACDSee programme.... seems to work well.

That's  because the profile photo resizes automatically.

Again, I advise against reducing the quality you take on the camera, because that reduces your file resolutions and who knows when you may want/need a high res copy??

I just by mistake clicked on the post button and re-posted Eric's query. sorry about that!
Eric.
I assume you load your picutres into a computer running windows. Windows explorer will show you the size of our file if you set it to VIEW - DETAILS. If you still do not see the size, set VIEWS-CHOOSE Details and tick size. If the size is too large, you will have to use a picture editing program and save a copy with smaller size, resoultion, quality or whatever. I use Photoshop but If you do not have it my instructions would not help you so I abstain for the moment.

Gote,

You remind me of a story from a friend in a computer telephone service.

Presumably you have heard about the computer owner who could not find the "Any key"  Caps Lock, yes. Ctrl yes, Alt, yes but Any???? ??? ??? ???

An excellent free photo editing facility can be downloaded at:-

http://www.faststone.org/

When you open this editing package simply move your cursor to the top, bottom, left and right of the screen to access the multitude of options.  Please note : This is not available for Mac users.

Highly recommended and I'm not even on commission!   :D
