does the snowdrop company send out bulbs with flower? or just flowering size bulbs?

Rob, I've had bulbs from Ron Mackenzie with flowers on and some without. It depends when they're sent out and how early/late the season is. I suspect it's possible that with the early season we're getting this year, they may arrive quite early.

'Ronald Mackenzie' is, I believe, a yellow-marked form of gracilis (or a hybrid therefrom) and definitely not the same as 'Ecusson d'Or'. The description in Ron Mackenzie's catalogue is incorrect, which may be misleading you. 'Ronald Mackenzie' has yellow markings at the top and base of the inner petals, not the outer petals as stated in the catalogue. This was obviously a slip by Ron when preparing the catalogue.

Ron, when I spoke to him recently, seemed very pleased with and full of praise for the new double 'Lady Fairhaven' so I'd say it must be good.

There is a photo and a brief write up of G. 'Ronald Mackenzie' in the 2004/5 edition of the RHS Daffodils, Snowdrops & Tulips Yearbook.

I first saw G. 'Lady Fairhaven' at the Galanthus Gala in 2006, when a single bulb was offered in the Auction, and was impressed by it then - I saw it again in full flower earlier this year and noted it as a 'big tight double', altogether a superb snowdrop.

How strange, Paddy... the first time I tried the link it brought me a page with the relevant Yearbook included but when I tried two more times I got another page! Interestingly, when I went to the RHS site earlier , I could only bring up details about the 2007-8 Yearbook, the search engine said it could find nothing for the 2008-9 version! I guess ALL search engines are a bit temperamental

Chris' chap is the cheaper bet, though, just as he said.... but, as Paddy points out elsewhere, it is possible to buy with credit cards from the RHS direct bookshop, which is very handy for overseas folks.

But, Maggi, for those of us living in Euroland the bother of getting such a small amount of sterling is just too much of a bother and a credit card payment over the internet is so much more convenient.


And, yes the internet ULRs are a puzzle, not even copying and pasting accurately.
