Calvin, others may know better but I think for purposes of travel on to Nottingham you would do better landing at Heathrow. There are good coach and bus links to central London and this may provide you with some starting information:-

Can anyone in England give us some useful hints about travel to and from Nottingham from the major airports?
Or of  best train routes?

I know how complicated a journey it seems from Aberdeen by train so it must be a bit of a nightmare for overseas folks trying to make arrangements.

Trains from London to Nottingham used to go from St Pancras, I presume they still do. There is also national bus service from Waterloo bus station. I'll check if there is a direct coach from Heathrow otherwise its shuttle train/bus in to London.
Have a great time Calvin. I won't be at the conference but may make the show on the Saturday.
Cheers
Mick
*** sorry that should be Victoria coach station ***** There are direct coaches from Heathrow to Nottingham (Broad Marsh station) journey time approx 3:15 hours.

If coming from overseas it probably doesn't matter much which of London's airports you arrive at. As has been said there are direct coach services from Heathrow, and probably from Gatwick, but I don't know how frequent they are. All the airports have good rail links to central London and there are frequent trains to Nottingham from London. London to Notingham about 2 hours.

I'll try and dig up some web links to help but it may take some time (I've just had my priorities for this evening "reinforced").

Calvin,
there is a "Tube" (underground train) which will take you from Heathrow straight through London to Saint Pancras / Kings Cross (they are next to each other) Train stations.
There are maps in all the tube stations and on all the tube trains so that it is very easy to get through the london underground. There is a very good and very quick train service to Nottingham (I think every half hour, taking perhaps 1 1/2 hours) from the high level platform in St Pancras.
Beware of the train ticket costs traveling to Nottingham if you don't have tickets in advance.

The express trains may not stop at the smaller stations, you might as well get off at the main train station in Nottingham, there is a taxi rank there and it is about two miles to the University, or ask for Broadmarsh bus station and there they will direct you on to find a bus to the University,
I have not forgotten the seeds I have promised you but am waiting for a better crop this year and hope to see you

Congratulations Calvin, so pleased you have this trip to the conference and you'll certainly make the most of it. Plant-wise, the UK has EVERYTHING you'd want to see and the chance to meet all the people who'll be there is such a wonderful opportunity. I am green with envy. ;D

A couple of websites for you

www.nationalexpress.com is the home of the biggest coach operator and gives timetables (fairly frequent coaches) and you can buy tickets online. Journey takes just over 3 hours (M1 traffic permitting).

www.nationalrail.co.uk will allow you to plan a train journey and while they don't sell tickets they do show prices and links to various online ticket sellers.

A brief look suggested coach price around £40 and the train anything from £17 to £70. You have to have your wits about you to get good train deals. Total time from Heathrow changing in London about 3 hours.

Good luck, see you in Nottingham

Thanks to everybody for all the travel info you've supplied. Now that I know what my travel options are, things don't seem that daunting anymore. Now I just need to convince my supervisor that a few extra days of holiday after the conference would be worthwhile! ;)

There is now news on the AGS website with some information for those attending the Alpines 2011 Conference in Nottingham next month.

Apparantly the Pre-conference Information Packs have now been sent out to all delegates.

Some of the information can also be found via the links below:

How to Get There

There does not seem to be any information for those seeking to know details about the pre-conference tour  but the page where the above links are listed may be updated:

Edit: I am aware that some delegates have already begun their journey to Europe so I hope any of you in touch with those folks will be able to pass on this information to them.

Maggi, does one need to sign up in advance for workshops at the Conference?  Is there a final list of workshops available?
Thanks.

I imagine that sign-up for the workshops will take place actually at the event.

As for the final line-up of the workshops, that is more information that has not been passed on to us - sorry not to be of more help, Anne.

You will see from the Workshop Programme link ...
http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/events/2011/information/Workshop+Program/294/     that bookings for the workshops are asked for in advance of the event.

The AGS seems to prefer the spelling "program" we see!  :)

Well folks,
Just trying to decide whether to order four bottles of Sancerre Domaine Daulny at £28.80 per bottle or three bottles of Joseph Perrier Cuvee Royal Vintage Champagne at £60 per bottle or perhaps (cheapskate) a couple of jugs of orange juice at £7 per jug for the Gala Dinner?
Does this mean that attendees who don't order by credit card and in advance will not be able to assist the passage of their food with a bitter shandy or a well-earned G & T?
With the cost of the conference being so expensive I was at least hoping for a free (but small) glass of the University white at the gala nosh!   ;D

 ;D ;D ;D :P ::)
