wanted - anemone centered helleborus hybridus
« on: December 13, 2008, 10:57:24 AM »
Ive been looking for a anemone centred hybrid hellebore for years, but i haven't had much luck when it comes to ordering, usually sold out.

i have been disappointed in the past with supposedly anemone centered plants only to turn out as singles, however this is common in hellebore's, you never know how well they are going to breed what you desire.

so if anyone has a division they can sell/trade me then that would be great, i dont mind what colour it is/size.

many thanks
rob

Rob,

If you remind me around August, September next year I can send you seed from mine. I have a bunch of doubles which set seed regularly.  If you already have doubles then crossing a double and single often creates anemone centred offspring, but no idea of what percentage as I haven't looked that closely.  I find that crossing doubles often gets anemone centred too, but I would imagine that depends how much the line breeding for doubles has taken place in the parentage.  We have a whole different bunch of breeders over here than you guys over there, so probably ours have different traits to yours anyway.  I can try particular crosses for you (would need to sort this out by about June next year so I know which ones to do by hand) if you are wanting me to (i.e doubles to doubles, doubles to singles, anemone centreds to singles, doubles, or themselves, etc).  I just don't have the space to grow the seedlings unfortunately, so I tend to remove heads before seeding now if I remember to, and I get squillions (technical term that) of seedlings in my garden, including around doubles and anemone centreds etc.
Cheers.

Rob,

This week I received some hellebore seeds from New Zealand, so they are fresh.
Two packets are seeds from a double purple and a purple anemone, each open-pollinated.
I can send you some if you are interested.

Rob I do sow my own seed  fresh though I have germinated older seed but it can take time particularly as many donors don't always store their seed properly. I keep mine in the fridge which does improve their chances and next year if I do store any I shall take a leaf out of Kristl's book and store mine in moist vermiculite

Hi Rob, have you tried Elizabeth Town Hellebores in Tasmania?
They only send seed between January and March.
Here's a link to their catalogue.
You can email John from the web page and ask when the new catalogue will be ready.
I bought 15 different types in January this year and had almost 100% germination.

http://www.southcom.com.au/~hortus/catalogue.htm

The seeds have already had Warm/moist stratification, which is great, so you can sow them immediately.

thanks maggi, so much for thinking hellebores were only a UK love!

Hello Rob,

people here in Germany are nuts for hellebores, too!  :D
For 5 years I visit with some friends hellebore nurseries in Belgium and The Netherlands and Germany.
This year we visited Ashwood, because the best plants we have seen by friends came from there.
It was great! A hard day flying to Stansted and driving to Birmingham, but it was  worth the trouble!!!
I pefer to see the plant before I buy it.

Yes, but  it's not always easy to get where you want to be from where you are.... if you know what I mean!
Since airlines are closing down lots of routes and stopping flights to and from some places altogether, this is increasingly a problem... certainly is for Aberdeen  these days  :'(

Yes, Maggie is right, from Cologne you can´t fly cheap to Birmingham.
Maybe we do it with our own car next year?  :)

Karin - for you it should be easy to go to to the Airport (Düsseldorf)-Weeze - from there there are lowcost flights to Birmingham (found oneway ticket for 2.50€ + fees for baggage :o)- perhaps a alternative.
