...but all too easy to push the prices up on ebay if you bid as soon as you see it, which encourages someone else to top you, someone else to bid etc etc.

And there's always another year, especially if you are trying to get Deerslot

'Deerslot' in the book is perfect but in real life it's very variable and can be a bit disappointing. Mine always have a join between the two hoof prints

I concur.

I have seen 3 truly large clumps of it in my life and in each clump I only saw a few that had that perfect mark Mark 

I would say that out of 20 flowers in a clump only about 4 have the perfect deerslot - that then looks wonderful, but in my little patch it doesn´t perform consistently enough to get a place.
