Bulb Frames
« on: December 16, 2008, 07:57:56 PM »
Can anyone recommend a good aluminium specialist bulb frame to use on top of a raised bed please. I only seem to be able to find conventional cold frames when I Google.

David, I think the chums I know who have such frames always refer to them as "Access Frames", which I think is a Maker's name  and not just a description... have no idea if this helps or not.... we don't have that kind of swanky equipment here  ;)

Hmmmmmm! Two Wests only had a large conventional cold frame. Access do make the kind of frame I think of as a bulb frame but £150 for a 4 foot square model. For a few quid more I could get a 6 x 4 greenhouse. Back to the drawing board.

David if it's the 4' cold frame try going to B&Q, that's where I got mine a few years back, they only had one on display and had to order it, but as a fellow Tyke you will appreciate that mine was £60, allowing for inflation it is still probably less than the Access one and worth a try if you are passing.

You could ask a local joiner or metal yard to make you one

At Askival the Stone's built large rectangular raised 'tanks' out of concrete blocks and mounted home made frames on top of these. The bases were filled with sand and compost for the bulbs to grow in and the covers adjusted, as needed, to suit the requirements of the bulbs. The bases are about knee high and allow easy access and viewing of the bulbs.
For myself I have bought ordinary aluminium coldframes and mounted these on single block bases filled with sand as a plunge and the bulbs grow in pots. Maybe, now that I have all this spare time ::) I will rebuild the bases so that they are higher and try a proper bulb frame.

Brian, I was thinking of a bulb frame (ie. taller than a cold frame, with sliding glass sides for ease of access and a vented roof) rather than a convential cold frame. Similar to this one   http://www.garden-products.co.uk/customer/product.php?productid=21834

I rather fancy having a go at some of the more difficult Juno Irises and thought that one of these might well do the trick. But, given the price and my need for more greenhouse space in general.............. :-\

Hi David:

You should try importing them from Spain. Ask Rafa for information.

Alberto, thank you but taking into account what it costs to send a letter to Spain these days I don't think my £££s would go very far, but I will contact Rafa.

HAHAHHA JaJAJJAJAJ Alberto you are mad!!

This is how id did my bulb frame with bricks, iron and doble glass. It is important to isolate the bublframe against trees roots makeing a concret layer.

Beautiful work, Rafa!
Now that I've seen your handsome frame, I want to plant vines all over mine so no one will see it.

Just georgous!

Are you sure your home is located in warm and sunny Spain?
