Yellow Rh.campylogynum

Any information’s of this lovely yellow Rh. campylogynum are very welcome!
I got it from a Danish AGS member, who got it from the widow of another AGS member.
Only info: from AGS seed app. 15-20 years ago.
Some may suggest it must be a hybrid, but growing several diff. clones and hundred of cw seedlings it behave and look exactly like a “true” campylogynum.
Only diff I have observed, a little more difficult to root from cuttings.

Last year I think I went through the back issues of the AGS seed exchanges and only found open-pollinated campylogynum listed in a couple of years around those dates.  Will do again over the holidays as I can't remember which variety was listed.

While I am very fond of the hybrid rhodo 'Merganser' which is a neat growing plant with lovely clear yellow, waxy bell flowers, I would be VERY keento have this yellow charmer ...... look at that quality foliage..... and the flower colour is superb!
I am very envious!



Mark, the campylocarpum Ghunsa you list above is a different species altogether!

Could it be from wild-collected seed?  Until recently, the AGS listed such seed under
the name of each donor, which makes a search more time-consuming.

I am going through the lists of the 1980s.  There was a lot of seeds from an AGS
Expedition to Sikkim in the 1984 list. 

No mention of R. campylogynum in the reports of the Sikkim expedition (AGS 52:3).

There have been yellow campylogynums in the U.S.

In 1980 I  bought a rooted cutting of "R.c. var myrtilloides #5 yellow" from
Caperci's nursery (Rainier Mountain Alpine Gardens) near Seattle Washington.
I don't have it now.  Lyn Watts of The Greenery in Bellevue Washington, bought
Caperci's stock.  He describes #5 as having small tubular yellow flowers.

A photo of Kim, Caperci's yellow hybrid of R. campylogynum x R.c. var cremastum
 is on the cover of the American Rhododendron Society Journal, summer 1983 (vol 37:3).
 It has salmon - pink buds that open yellow.  The first mention of it in print was in
1974, so seeds from it, or from #5, could have been donated to the AGS in the 80s or 90s.

Seed of campylogynum hybrids was offered in 1980, and of campylogynum myrtilloides
several times throughout the 80s, but the AGS did not publish a list of donors
of garden seed, so it isn't possible to figure out who might have donated them.

My sleuthing is over - time for lunch.  But I hope seeds of the lovely plant
that started this will be offered in one of the seedlists.

I see in Jens' photo that there is the slightest hint of some pink on the edges of the flowers.

Oh, dear, I am suffering serious jealousy here!  
R. campylogynum   are such great little plants in ANY colour...... as the saying goes " what's not to love?"

Diane  -  One wonders how yellow would result from a cross of campylogym x campylogynum Cremastum? Bizarre.  Even more bizarre is Caperci's yellow ex myrtilloides.  I can see the odd white appearing but the white on the trade was a dirty white as best as I remember, it parted company rather quickly.

Nothing on the ACE (AGS China Expedition List) that has since been identified. Were there not a lot of ACE unkown lepidote species collected? Anyone?

Maybe others have previous lists.

The Yellow one grows a little less than the wellknown "Claret" from Cox.
