Monksilver's "Spring Thing"

Monksilver Nursery's "Spring Thing" is on March 14th 2009.
Time: 10 am - 4 pm 
Venue: Monksilver Nursery
Venue details: Oakington Road, Cottenham, Cambridge

Joe Sharman's Monksilver Nursery is the place to find some unusual spring plants. He invites specialist nurseries from around the country to bring their best and his plants will also be available. The event is held in a marquee to shelter the keen plantsmen who always brave the cold to come and there will be hot drinks available.

I'm not sure what year they refer to but Among the nurseries will be Bluebell from Derbyshire, Glen Chantry, Manor and Beeches from Essex, Phedar from Lancashire, Anita Thorp from Leicestershire and 39 Steps from Glamorgan – all gathered in one place so think how much petrol the buyer saves.

I once phoned someone in Bristol about buying a chinchilla. They said could I collect it. I said no. They then said how about meeting them halfway. So I said when could they come to Lancaster, as that was about halfway? We could meet you in Birmingham was the reply. Well that's 265 miles from Dunblane. Cambridge is 321 miles. No point in flying as of the weight restrictions in hand luggage.

I thought average hand luggage allowance was 9kgs.  It varies from 7kgs  to 10kgs, I think ,.... I'm just worried about when the airlines go back to weighing all the passengers...... ::) :-[ :-\ :-X

You would enjoy down there especially the Galanthus Gala. At Spring Thing you'll find plants you maybe won't find in Scotland

Coming back from a winter study weekend in BC quite awhile back we bought all the missing back issues of the SRGC and AGS Journals from their inceptions. There was a weight limit for hand-helds and we tried to look non-chalant as we approached security despite the tonnage. They said nothing at the check-in but upon leaving a guard whispered that I was walking with a noticeable tilt. Wouldn't happen these days. Good reading for the 6.5 hours flight to the east coast.

So it's not just me then - coming back from Madeira in January my hand luggage was bursting at the seems with my purchased plants (and all the free cuttings and offsets that SRGC member Michael showered me with).  I had to practice tossing my hand case around as if it didn't really weight 15lbs 15kgs!   ;D  (edit - got my lbs and kgs confused  ::))
 
Concerning Monsilver - I may have a look and see if it can be done by train from London.

When we went to Europe on mountaineering holidays we had to practice the 'nonchalant' look and there was no way that we dare let the flight hostess help us put our hand luggage into the locker! I have heard it said that at one time mountaineers used to wrap their climbing ropes round their bodies and then pull a jersey over the top. I must admit to not having witnessed this myself.

Hand luggage is sometimes only 5kg (maybe on charter flights).  Sometimes as much as 10kg, and some airlines take your hand luggage as part of your total 20 or 25kg.
And yes, we have quite frequently had hand luggage weighed - I think only in the last couple of years - since they upped all the regulations about only carrying one item on board.  Prior to that, never weighed.    I also stuff my pockets with a couple of heavy books - they never weigh you (thank goodness)  ;D
