Posting - Accents
« on: January 17, 2009, 09:57:27 PM »
Maggi - is there any facility for adding accents when posting - acute, grave, cedilla, umlaut etc. Some people seem to be able to do this but I haven't been able to discover how.

Gerry, if there is an easy way to do this, I  haven't found it :D
In another thread, long ago, maybe even the "Let me introduce myself" pages, whe did have a try at sorting this out, and various folks gave tips for typing assorted symbols.....using "code" keys etc,  most of which did not work for me... so, I "collect"  them...... when I see a name with symbols, I copy and paste it into a file that I keep for just this purpose, to enable me to copy and paste them into a text when needed.  That, for me, is the easiest way .....clever folks will now come and tell the "proper" way to do it.......! I know that in Word documents it is quite easy to bring up a table of symbols, scientific and for language use, but I can't crack finding that elsewhere  :P Sorry not to be more help!
When working in Word... open the INSERT menu, from the top of the page and from the drop down list choose SYMBOL.... you can choose all sorts of languages etc there... type' em into a document and them use to coy and paste here.... :)

some advice here.....

That's a  handy one, Mark,  I need to print that out, I reckon!

I remember now what I didn't twig before, for a PC, you use the number pad, holding Alt and typing the numbers on the number pad, with the NUM LOCK ON!

Göte....... Chlöe......... see, it works!

Here's a quick copy and paste though....
    é     Acute
    ç    Cedilla
    â    Circumflex
    è    Grave
    ñ    Tilde
    ü    Umlaut/Diaeresis

Thanks Mark. My God, this even includes details for Macs, though I haven't tried it yet. I've never been within a million miles of 'Word' since I'm completely loyal to  AppleWorks.  One can do it there (& then paste) but I can never remember how.

And also French, Dutch, German, Scottish, Kiwi, Aussie, American etc. That would REALLY liven things up. ;D

Maggi, that is what we forgot to tell you during the last discussion about this matter  :-[ :-[

Here is a link to a Belgian site with the ASCII list as we used it when we wrote letters in
Word Perfect (ages ago, I think.  ;D ) before there was Windows.

If you have a windows OS, and you forget where you stashed the link Mark posted, you can use the character map in accessories.

Helen, that is just what I meant with the ASCII table. But when you use only Alt+163 it is ú.   ;)

Oh Maggie

I feel honoured by being used as an example   ;D

Another way if you use 'Word' is to write in Word, use 'Insert' 'symbol' and paste the whole text when finished.

This way it is even possible to spell Chloë right   :P

One also is helped by the automatic spellchecker and the thesaurus.

For Mac users here is a summary of how to do it for pasting. After typing opt plus the accent-specific symbol you type the letter you wish to accent. As usual, Macs provide the simpler & more elegant procedure.

Character map is in different places on different versions of Windows, on XP it is at:

Start->All programs->Accessories->System tools->Character map

Double click on the character you want, click on "Copy" (or Control C), back to your message and Control V paste.

I recall it was in Accessories in older versions of Windows.
