Hello fellow 'philes

I thought you'd like to see a snowdrop I bought at a local nursery in a pot of 5 so called 'nivalis' but I'm not sure how to upload the jpgs.

Maggi can you help........or anyone else?

Mike, when you open a 'reply' page, click '+ Additional options...' bottom left of the box in which you are typing. The just 'Browse' until you find the Jpeg. As long as it is 350kb or less it will upload. To add more, click 'more  attachments' and it will open another browse line.

Very nice indeed.  I presume it's an elwesii, although I can't quite tell from the photos.

It was labeled as nivalis but I would say it was elwesii.

There were 5 bulbs in the pot growing in very wet peat based compost. Two bulbs had gone over, one was in flower (still is), a typical elwesii, nice but not remarkable & one is a very small elwesii type that looks very neat in stature.......I'm keeping an eye on this one as well as the one in the photos.

All the bulbs were good size & all had a great many vigorous roots.

it is nice to find good'uns in the garden centre isn't it.  In previous years I have always scanned the shelves looking for nice markings.  I have found some nice elwesii finds too - unfortunately I have never found them very long lasting.  I had a nice fat one that looked rather like your find - but this year it too seems to have gone to the great snowdrop heaven.   

Fingers crossed that your find turns out to be long lived.

Heaven must be full of the very best snowdrops John as it seems to be the most treasured ones that give up the ghost all too readily!

I showed it to Angela Winfield on Saturday whilst I was at Snape Cottage & she thought it was a significant find. She said it reminded her of a greentipped Diggory (before it lifts up the outer petals).

I was helping her with some final titivating of the garden ready for the first of her snowdrops Sundays this year.

I bought four pots of elwesii at a local garden centre.  I separated out many different markings (over 22), including one with green tips rather like mike's.  I have made a note of the different marks and potted them up singly to see what they look like next year.
I note everyone's comments about garden centre snowdrops not being long lived, but I hope some will disprove that and muliply.

Hi Rob, when my neighbours see me going around my garden when I get home form work, croopied down with a torch to look at my little beauties.......(my snowdrops that is!) they surely must think I'm bonkers.

I've also given up trying to explain to others in my office why its not madness being so enthusiastic about snowdrops when all the Philistines see is little white blobs.

Its good to find fellowship here!!!!

According to the 'Somerset dictionary' Croopy down means to squat down.
