I used them and was supplied with a white pen. The writing washed off, which is 'king useless! :'(

It wouldn't have if you had used a white paint pen. I have some written in 2005 that are perfectly clear and readable.

By the way, if you order get the finest nib possible, the others are too thick except for Jumbo black labels

I have seen the labels Marks is referring to and they seem to be very good, very flexible and written on with a white or silver pen. I've never used them myself nor seen them for sale. Mark, Bob and Margaret use them and might be able to tell you where they got them.

While on labels, does anyone know of a good value metal engraver for use with aluminium labels? It is possible to get a set of metal lettering punches but I imagine that would be a very slow method of writing names on labels. I have noticed that Jo uses such a method.

Paddy,I got one in Lidl a few months ago for €19 and it works a treat on the aluminium labels. I write the name on the label with pencil first and then engrave over it.

Michael,

I was told during the week that Lidl had such in stock but when I visited I could not find it. Perhaps, they will stock them again.

As I said, the white paint pen that was supplied for the purpose just wipes off. The silver one is more permanent, as Mark sent me a couple of plants with these and they are fine.

We got some scratchable black labels at the RHS Show last week. We've had the same ones in a trough here since 1987 and they're still in fine shape. The company is based in Newton Abbot.

Happy to have met John Finch there, even royalty stopped for him outside the hall.

You can probably do what I do. I use a spray bottle with auto laquer and spray my labels to the colour I want which is brown on the backside and olive green on the front.
It might have unpleasant surface effects on some types of plastic.  I use aluminium venetian blind stock.
I also write with an oldashioned pen and nib using what essentially is black car paint. The paint used for cars is very durable My oldest labels of his type are a dozen of years old and look like new - even if perhaps dirty.
