Saxifrage-March 2009

Nothing as spectacular as these (awesome) monsters I saw on the show benches - but here are two Saxes flowering in the garden right now (much better than last year !) :


1) Saxifraga 'Joseph Capek'
2) Saxifraga burseriana 'Major'

Another one that is in flower now:

Saxifraga lilacina

No spring in sight in southern Germany,but in spite of the nasty weather the Kabschias in
the frame seem to explode. I love these little beauties since the beginning of my rockgardening
hobby,but only a few survive in the open of my hot garden.Therefore I prefer to cultivate them
in the frame in 7x7cm plastic pots with shading during the hot days.
Sax.Joyce Carruthers gave me the bonus of a double flower this year
Sax.x akinfievii, a natural hybrid (dinnikii x juniperifolia) from Central Caucasus
Sax.Louis Armstrong (left) and Sax.Satchmo have the name of this unforgetable and famous star.

There was a time when i was growing kabshias. I hope to be able to do it again some time.
One thing I learnt was that a good supply of water at lower levels was very helpful.
I experimented by letting pots stand on a bed of wet sand with capillary connection all the way down to the water table
They would grow very vigorously also in a sunny position. I am today planning to build a small bed - possibly a through - where I can keep the water table at some 15 cm below the surface in the growing season and drain completely during the winter. I am at 59°North so my experience may be atypical but I have noted that plants that in the lowlands grow in shade or semi-shade will grow in fully exposed position in the mountains provided that there is melting snow higher up so that water is abundant.

Here's Saxifraga 'Karl Capek' again - picture taken a few days earlier than in the original post so that you can get a better view of the leaves.
Right now, the leaves are invisible - smothered with flowers i

Next is Saxifraga irvingii 'Gem' growing in Tufa
