It's a great area to visit from the first of March
(when I've seen Trillium rivale in flower) right
through the summer when lilies are in bloom.
Whenever I go, I go to my favourite spots, but
also try a new road or two, as they will have
different flowers.
One hint if you want to photograph flowers: take
a picture of the first one you see, instead of waiting
for a better one. Sometimes you won't see another
one, and by the time you realize your mistake, you're
way too far away to go back.
I used to find it frustrating to try to identify the many
endemics because the area was included neither in
Oregon nor California books. Fortunately, Phyllis Gustafson,
who lives in the Siskiyous and used to run a seed company,
joined with photographer Mark Turner to produce Wildflowers
of the Pacific Northwest (Timber Press)
