Iris graeberiana---- oh no its not!
« on: May 04, 2009, 11:06:01 AM »
This is our Iris graeberiana. Oh yes it is - it said so on the bag from the Bulb Exchange in 2006! It is not just that I mis-labled the pot, I know another Forumist who has exactly the same tale to tell.
It is Ornithogalum and I am saying ?nutans. Does anyone else have an opinion?

Growing well, though, isn't it?  ;D
I know mistakes do happen but I'm not too sure how one mistakes an Iris for an Ornithogalum :-\

I have the same 'Iris graeberiana' as David, from the same source, but have not grown it so well.  I'd decided from the bulbs it was muscari or ornithogalum and when it flowered this year it was confirmed as Ornithogalum nutans.  I do wish people would not pass on bulbs or seed in exchanges unless they are sure of their identity.

Presumably you knew it was wrong as soon as you opened the bag and found no juno-type storage roots?

The bulbs did not look right, but they were small. However, as soon as the first leaves showed in 2007 it was obvious that they were not junos. Interestingly quite a few people have looked at the leaves and passed on identification. I found them to be interesting.
If Maggie can tell me how to keep the pot of bulbs in good condition I will take them through to Aberdeen Show for her - 12 days to go!!!

Er... Maggi...... he lives in Scotland..... what ever else could he expect?  Not like it's likely to be warm and sunny now is it?  ;D ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist.  :-[
Cheers.

I know, Paul, but the Scottish Tourist Board has me on a one bar of choc a week retainer to promote the fabulous weather of my homeland so I feel duty bound every now and then to make an effort in this respect  ;)
Actually, though David lives further north than I, that area is known for its terrific growing conditions, which includes (sometimes) lovely mild weather   ::)

Just one bar a week?  Geez, you're cheap!  ;)  I think you're worth MUCH more than that.  ;D
Cheers.

Paul, this area of Scotland is known as the 'Banana Belt' by some because of its mild and dry climate. Unfortunatly it has not lived up to this title for the last couple of years and is currently supplying the 'cool and a bit shaded' as recommended by Maggie with some welcome rain thrown in as a bonus!
And Maggie - cheap!!! You have not seen the size quality of the bar.
