Hello :)   We announce TWO forthcoming events occuring this SEPTEMBER.
The Ron McBeath / Rob Potterton Plant & Bulb sales weekend will take place at Lamberton Nursery, Lamberton near Berwick on Saturday / Sunday 19/20 September, a very warm welcome to all accompanied by refreshments & banter, a unique range of rare & unusual plants & bulbs, superb garden, good weather and oh what a view!!!!  :o

Then for those who complain that Ron's place is too far north, the following weekend Ron & Susan McBeath will join us at Pottertons Nursery Weekend in Lincolnshire, on Saturday / Sunday 26 & 27 September. Ron will overload his van with goodies to tempt you (pre-orders welcome) and we shall offer over 450 varieties of bulbs plus 600 varieties of alpines & woodland plants. Our large rockery & gardens are open to view plus nursery tours, refreshments, ..... and of course our children will no doubt perform too :D The nursery is situated one mile off the A46 at Nettleton, 20 miles north-east of Lincoln, train station at Market Rasen 6 miles away and Humberside Airport is 7 miles.

In addition The Lincolnshire Group of the Alpine Garden Society have invited Carole & Ian Bainbridge from Edinburgh to give their entertaining talk "Making Troughs from Fish Boxes" at 2.00pm at the Nettleton Village Hall on Saturday 26 September. Entrance is free, refreshments available.

The Autumn Show was changed because 1/ Some exhibitors wanted it
2/ We could not get in on Friday night to set the show up in October ( Line Dancing)
3/ I was told there was nothing else on the last Sat in September.
                                                             how wrong that was!!
If it goes ahead next year Autumn South Show will be on SATURDAY 25th SEPTEMBER 2010.
Best Wishes David.

Thanks to all who came along to our nursery events over the last two weekends, it was a great pleasure meeting you all. This weekend in Lincolnshire was a real belter, dry & sunny with the temperature in the mid 60's, customers arrived thick & fast both days from as far afield as south Wales, London, Suffolk and Middlesborough. The Saturday talk by Ian & Carol Bainbridge was thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience and we were so busy around the nursery i didnt have chance to take any photographs.

Ron & Susan McBeath (and Sula) departed late Sunday for the long drive north just as the autumn leaves started to fall. Like other nurseryworkers throughout the country we are now looking forward to winters rest and much needed recouperation.

These are my photos Rob.
Shame I did not use the video though, as it meant no record of the snowstorm created when Ian borrowed a garden vac to clean up the bits of polystyrene- not realising the collection bag was not fastened correctly!
We had an enjoyable day and thanks to all concerned with putting it on.

.....and no doubt named after Sula bassana, the gannet? Alas, the powers that be have renamed the gannet. It is now not a bird but a mulberry Morus bassanus! ::)

I never thought about the link. On a similar vein our last dog was Fowler as in wildfowler and the one before was Snipe. A shooting friends dog was Teal

Sula was named by Ron & Susan McBeath after the uninhabited Scottish island in the North Atlantic, 11 miles west of North Rona. One of the most remote of the British Isles, it lies more than forty miles north of Lewis and is best known for its population of gannets.

Thanks Rob. Again, I have just learned something new.  It figures that the gannet be named after two small islands famous for their gannet colonies.

Here's an interesting fact. That chap who invented that flick football game Subbuteo wanted to register it under the name 'Hobby'. He was turned down and was told the word hobby was generic for any pastime and couldn't be attached to a patent, so he named it after the Hobby, Falco subbuteo.
