This bizarre thing (which exactly matches the botanical description) is a seed of Walleria gracilis. A Namibian/South African member of the Tecophilaceae which is tuberous and has flowers rather reminiscent of potato flowers on prickly climbing/scrambling stems. An old thread on the forum recounts my difficulties in persuading this to break it's summer dormancy but I'm armed with new information this time!

No grid but the divisions on the ruler are 1mm. There are little tufts of black hairs all over the spherical part of the seed and on the tips of the appendages.

These appear to be taken from the pod well before what I would call fully ripe which is in my experience (I only have experience of seed in I. winogradowii. No others have set seed for me), a light brownish or milky coffee colour and the seeds have a slightly rough coat which occurs as the coat shrinks very slightly as the seed dries.

These pictures are very lovely and would make a nice necklace! ;D

Re Alan's seeds above, I have to assume then, that for many if not all irises and especially the rarer and more difficult species, it would be ideal to source seed that is harvested before full ripeness and probably sown immediately. If only we could! Most such seeds except from our own gardens, are well dried and maybe months old before we get them. We are fighting a long and possibly fruitless battle even as we order them.
