I was just about thinking Ragwort Dave ??? It could well be a salvia but not, as you say, S. caespitosa. I've had several things as that and the only couple of times it maybe WAS the right thing, judging from the seeds, it didn't germinate anyway.

I've just completed a search of Garden Web forums under Salvia caespitosa and interestingly an entry appears, april 07 showing a pic, (admittedly not as drawn in the foliage),of my plant , and asking for an ID.
That person had also raised it from seed --also from NARGS .....donated from a person in England......

So it's obviously being donated under an incorrect name for a number of years now.

No formal id was made on that Forum however the following comment was made -----

("Opposite leaves (in pairs) and alternating 90 degrees with a square stem (not always obvious) makes it a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae, Labiatae).
I pretty much agree it is a form of Scutellaria orientalis, though blooms will help ID it.")

Any comments ?.
Cheers dave.

Oh yes, now you mention it, it could well be Scutellaria orientalis. That has yellow flowers which take on a tan spot as they age, a lovely plant. If you Google it there's a good plant in the Cambridge Botanic Garden, potted.

Dave,
I posted a pic of this plant a year or two ago and I think it's some form of Teucrium with small purple flowers.
I've received it from NARGS 2 years running from at least 2 different donors listed as pink flowers by one and purple by the other! Go figure ??? It's probably firmly entrenched as Salvia caespitosa in many gardens and being re-donated again and again!
cheers

The leaf form doesn't fit Scutellaria orientalis.  Doesn't look as though the habit does either, but the leaves are way off.

I continue to grow it as it self seeds well and makes a nice foliage plant in full sun. I just let all the plants to to seed!

Lucky you to have the room Fermi   :)

Our place ,(garden), is 'chocka block' and with no more area  :'(  available to develop i need to be ruthless in deciding on what stays.

Doesn't stop me from continuing to sow seed though ;)

Cheers dave.

Don't bin it Dave. If you don't want to grow it it could find a home here. I'm curious now. :D

Rightio Lesley
I've noted my diary to bring the plant down to Waituna next month ,(12th), when the Otago Group are visiting.I'm sure John F.or others will take it back up for you.
Will let you know in due course what happens.

Cheers dave.

I'd love to go on the Waituna trip but being a Saturday, I can't.
Simon, nothing through yet, but a single seedling of Lamium armenum a couple of days ago, sown over a year ago!

If nothing happens let me know. They are having a later flower just now- maybe not enough time for seed to ripen, but you never know. I also have a few that have appeared over the last month or so as self sown plants.
