Scilla numidica
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:24:18 PM »
Scilla numidica is new to me. They came in to leaf and now 3 months later they are going dormant. Are they confused? What is the normal cycle?

Mark we had bulbils and seed from a lady we met on a Naturetrek holiday some years ago.  She is a neighbour of Brian Matthew the bulb man and I think they may have come from him originally.  Foliage is reddish and when they do flower they are a bit disappointing pinkish flowers but only about six at the top of a longish stem.

Marc,

This picture shows what I have as scilla numidica.
The bulbs are grown from seeds collected in Tunesia.
Note this scilla is only half-hardy!

I have to say Luc yours looks a lot better than mine.  The flower spikes are longer and more densely flowered.  How long is it since you sowed the seed, perhaps mine might improve with age?

The sowing dates back to autumn 1996.
About the height of the flowerstalks : the individual flower begins with a short stalk and
elongates while the flower ages.

Marc,
S. numidica follows the growing cycle of the Mediterranean bulbs - in leaf from November
till approx. April.
