Fraser's site lowers it to 6, at least.
Fraser's site also claims that H. cyclophyllus i is zone 7,

Lori

I get the distinct impression they pull the Zones out of a hat.    I wonder how they would substantiate their zonal claims.  They even list Zones for completely untried & new material.  Never minimalize the potential buyer list by rating too tender what?  Well, at least most of the time.  Zonal denial as a friend used to say.

No probelm with H. cyclophyllus here.

Wow, sounds like you have a nice collection, Helen!

Fraser's site also claims that H. cyclophyllus i is zone 7, but I had one winter over last year... if it was REALLY zone 7, it's hard to imagine it lasting through even one winter (even with the snow cover we had last year).  It will be interesting to see if it comes up this spring, of course.

Lori, all my hellebores are from seeds apart from a spotted lady which I don't like.
I hope your H.cyclophyllus survives.
I was looking at thimble farm's catalogue yesterday, can't justify spending 35$ on a plant that is probably doomed.

John, the sternii that survived last winter was a very small seedling. My biggest argutifolias rotted to the ground last winter I was going to dig them out but noticed heaps of new growth coming. They quickly grew back to their previous size but didn't flower. I love the foliage and don't mind not getting flowers.
I have only had a few argutifolias flower.
Am hoping some of my Elizabethtown seedlings will flower this year.

I love the purple x hybridus , I hope I get some like that.
Good luck with the thibetanus seeds, I have some that have been sitting in a baggie for more than a year, no sign of germination. :(

Helen  - I should have mentioned that it always survives at the root to come back strongly. We sometimes cut them back after a bad winter. They oftentimes flower here even when the leaves get fried.

Quite gorgeous flowers Chris on your thibetanus seedlings.

Ian I've not heard of that one. Where is it from and how long has it been around? The foliage looks something special. A pic maybe of the flower held up? :)

Yes, I think the leaves get more and more dissected with age.
My seedlings are only a couple of years old and aren't very
frizzy yet.

Lesley just for you. The flower is a bit battered it has stood out for over a month in our recent tough weather. The foliage on mature plants is quite unusual and attractive as Maggi's link shows

Mmm, a gorgeous green and with foliage as fine as Paeonia tenuifolia. A lovely plant altogether.

here another 3 green flowers, what you can't see on the pictures is the size of the flowers, the first H.cyclophyllus is 8cm, 2 H.dumetorum is the smallest nearly 2cm and H.odorus 4.5cm, what I also can't give is the wonderfull parfum of H.odorus
