Cancellation of Local Group SRGC Meeting - Bad Weather

Cancellation of Aberdeen Group SRGC Meeting Tuesday 5th January 2010

SRGC Friends, Members of the Aberdeen Rock Garden Group..... the meeting for Tuesday 5th January 2010, scheduled to take place at the Rubislaw Church Halls  in Aberdeen has been called off. The continuing bad weather and the very bad state of roads and  pavements, even in the city, make the notion of tomorrow's  evening meeting unworkable. It is too dangerous and the number of people willing to even attempt to attend in such conditions would be low in the extreme. Every attempt will be made to contact as many members as possible and we would ask that if you know of anyone who might have been planning to attend that you contact them with this news of the cancellation.
Our Speaker, Roma Fiddes, lives out in Kemnay and was understandably nervous about the journey to and from the meeting. We are confident that Roma will consent to be a Speaker at some other date in the future, when she and her audience, can travel with confidence.
The chance of a cancellation being necessary is just a risk we have to take when we plan an early year meeting.... most times we manage to hold it successfully.... fingers crossed for the next meetings!

Perth Group has also cancelled tonight's meeting, more for the sake that the parking area has been used to dump snow and the streets around although passable won't be able to accommodate parking. Also sitting in the hall for a few hours then coming back home to a new fall of snow isn't the best. Stuart Pawley says the postman hasn't been able to deliver since Christmas. Only our AGM and members slides planned for tonight.

Highland Group meeting is not until next Wednesday but we are already considering an early cancellation. Our Group is a rural one and the speakers will have to travel up from Edinburgh. We will make our decision by the weekend.

It's a bit ironic that we've recently introduced a "rule" that our local AGS meetings will be cancelled if the weather conditons indicate that there is a high risk of bush fire!!!
cheers

Highland Group - Wednesday 13 January
The Highland Group has just called off the talk in Nairn booked for next Wednesday. Local roads are bad and there does not seem to be much hope of improvement. For some reason our speakers, Carole and Ian Bainbridge, seemed quite relieved not to have to be driving up from Edinburgh, I can't understand why  ::)

Talking of getting stuck, the Tesco shopping delivery van tried to reverse back down our track last night and became stuck.  We tried to pull him out, but he had to leave the van here and go home.

He returned this morning and we succeeded in pulling him out with a 4x4 and lots of digging and grit !

And it still continues. The Secretary of the Moray Group is telephoning round to advise that their meeting in Elgin this evening is cancelled due to snow! Here, along the coastal strip, we just have a dusting but inland, were most of the embers live, it is seemingly very bad. Snow and drifting and forcast to get worse as the day goes on.
The Cairngorm ski area is closed, again, because the access road is blocked by drifting snow.

A good call for the meetings, David. Certainly down here in Aberdeen the snow is falling freely on roads which are pretty icy in parts... must be pretty awful in rural areas, I'd think.
Thanks goodness we got a better night at the start of the week for our Aberdeen Group talk from Roma Fiddes!
We'd have had to cancel again in this weather, for sure.

Moray Group are advising of a second successive cancellation due to snow. There is just no way that Julia is going to get from Pitlochry unless she can fly - even then, she would likely be blown off course!

Cancellation of Aberdeen SRGC Meeting - Bad Weather
Bad news,Folks, here we are on the last day of March and another wetahr related Meeting Cancellation.
The Aberdeen Group meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled : the high winds and snow are making travelling conditions treacherous and we'll all be safer staying at home!

The snow began in Aberdeen city around midnight but there had been much more before that in outlying areas.
I know that our planned speaker for this evening, Ian the Christie kind, has suffered serious damage to his poly tunnels and glasshouses in the gales, so the weather down at Kirriemuir is awful.

We are sorry not to have Ian visit our Group but look forward to seeing as many mambers as possible for our final meeting of this season on Tuesday 27th April.

Very sorry to hear that things are so bad up there again and Susan & I really hope that Ian in Kirriemuir is coping OK and that things improve soon.

Very best wishes to all of you, from a merely soggy Lancashire.
