Hippeastrum 2010
« on: March 03, 2010, 03:33:45 PM »
I didn't see that anyone had started this thread so here it is.  This is the first of many bloomers for the year.  It is the old tried and true Red Lion.  I have many many Hippeastrum yet to come so this will be one area I will probably be a regular contributor.

This is my first post to the forum I have lurked for several months though.  I have a few questions maybe someone can answer for me. What goes and doesn't go on this forum?  Basic Netiquette for the SRG Forum.  I noticed most information is posted in already established threads is this the preferred way to post images rather than starting many individual threads?

I have some old pictures from last season I felt inclined to share should I start a thread and just post them all together in an appropriate location and as an introduction for myself?

I am working hard updating my Blog with pictures from trips to Botanical Gardens this winter.  A few are obscure so it is nice to show people a few places they would never know existed.  I have a long way to go and there is also some nice older content.  If you would like to check it out here is a link and like I said it is a work in progress and with out a lot in bloom or noteworthy just now. I will be adding all the trip photo's as time permits.  http://flowerfarmandgardens.blogspot.com/

Hello Tedd,

Welcome to the forum  :)

As Michael said, I'm sure the Forum Administrator Maggi Young can answer your questions about forum protocols and such.  There are postings in the Adminstration > General forum that describe how to post images, recommended maximum image sizes, etc.
http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?board=1.0

It would also be useful for you to edit your Profile signature block to show some basic info, such as your name, general locale, gardening zone info, any URLs, etc.

I think you will enjoy SRGC Forum, it is very active, diverse, and full of sharing knowledgeable people.

By the way, I saw on your blog site nice photos of Jasminum nudiflorum.  I just posted a sad photo of that today, the buds ready to open yesterday, but alas, it is snowing again today!

Hi Tedd,
Heres a few of mine to keep your Red Lion company.  I've been pollen dabbling with these so if anyone wants to try some seed do shout.

Has anyone tried the so-called 'hardy amaryllis' marketed as Sonatini?

Hippeastrum 'Benfica' - one of the deepest reds
Limona - dirty white with green centre and variable red streaks
Red Nymph - double red
Sumatra - the only one with any 'street cred' with some of my gardening friends!
Tres Chic - 6-7 flowers per stem

Tres Chic came from the Royal Colors nursery in the Netherlands - expensive but very good quality bulbs.

After a three year rest Hippeastrum reticulatum striatifolium has decided to flower again, at least the evergreen leaves always look ok when the plant is not in flower. When photographing it I noticed that the flower is lightly fragrant.

Great pictures, Josh.

I'll merge this page with the previous Hippeastrum 2010 page.
