Stirling Show at Dunblane 20th March 2010

A lovely day, full of sunshine and friendly faces for the Stirlingshire show today at Dunblane.
Lots of Forumists about the place and some 'lurkers' who are promising to join in soon  

The 'Glenrothes Greenfinger', also known as 'Secret Squirrel' but more  properly that maestro of the exhibition plant, Cyril Lafong won all manner of silverware and the premier award, the Forrest Medal for the most meritorious plant in the show. The Forrest medal plant was  Primula 'Broadwell Milkmaid' shown here with its companions , also from Cyril, in the main  three pan class.
This particular milkmaid was "well broad" as such charming rustic lassies often are and took a real trick with the judges.
The pot of Trillium rivale 'Purple Heart' must have run a close contender for the top honour, I would have thought... a super pan of this very pretty form. The third member of the group was Corydalis popovii, a comely threesome and no mistake....... not that the Squirrel is in the habit of making any mistakes!!
The BD was in charge of the one  camera we took and so the pix are down to him.... precious few people, I fear!

Quite a lot of 'stuff' to do here tonight so perhaps more pix tomorrow after work.

A few general pictures from Dunblane. The number of exhibits was down, as we all expected, but was still very respectable considering the recent (three months) weather.
Half an hour before judging starts the 'usual suspects' were looking concerned.

Show Secretary Sandy Leven staged this display of plants .....lots of snowdrops still fresh for the Galanthophiles to coo over and a super selection of other plants besides...... how he managedthis along with other show entries and duties, I can't imagine!
He was rewarded with a Gold Medal for his effort on this fine arrangement

Thanks for posting photos of this splendid show - the Eranthis 'Guinea Gold' pan is stunning and Sandy Leven's display of plants looking so perfect is amazing, a well deserved Gold Medal indeed. Lovely general shot to tantalise, thanks to everyone

Firstly the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh Display.

A few plants that especially took my eye were.
Gymnospermium albertii
A very fine pot of Narcissus cantabricus seedlings some of which had very long petals my favourite is the one on the extreme left.

And a pot of Dionysia curviflora x tapetodes.

Pity that the light was not very good in this corner of the Hall until the sun moved round as we were packing up.

A few general pictures of the benches which were not as well filled as they sometimes are but considering the winter we have had it was a great display and a real tonic for all visitors.

I think that considering the winter this was a very good show judging by the pictures. You have to be a week or two behind us even here in Northunberland and as I know from E Lancs yesterday a weeks sun and warmth makes a huge difference. Cyrils three pan was magnificent, any of them would have qualified for the supreme honour, it must have been close between the trillium and the primula and on the day its what the judges can see to be the right plant....for sure there would be plenty talk

Not even the fiercest of Winters seems to be able to beat Scottish growers !! 

Some gorgeous plants there... so difficult to choose a favourite.
I do think though that you should consider putting Cyril in a class of his own...    - this 3 pan entry blew me off my socks !! (and that does take some blowing..  )
