Acis 2010
« on: March 23, 2010, 03:03:42 PM »
spring has reached my area and a lot of plants are flowering  :D

One of my favorites is:

Acis nicaeensis ( grown from seeds ex AGS )

It is in a pot in my greenhouse - I grow also some other plants of this species free in my border they are much later ( and smaller )

Today I notet a fine fragrance on this flowers - different from Galanthus

Lovely Hans, mine are in the garden and not flowering yet.  I'd never realized that they were scented - I shall be down on hands and knees when mine flower!

Hans:

Please describe your potting mix in detail, also your feeding regimen.

I love the small Acis species, but have never had great success with them in pots, except for A. rosea and A. nicaeensis. If you can grow these so well in Germany, I ought to be able to get even better results, thanks to our milder winters and drier summers.

My problems may be cultural: overwatering (a great vice of mine), or soil overheating due to sun on the side of the pot.

Roger :

Like you I like all this Acis + Leucojum plants !

I can grow only A.nicaeense + A.autumnale outside ....all other are not hardy here.
There is for me not a problem with growing in pots -they are in summer totaly dry under my tables in greenhouse - watering from September until March ( all two weeks )
Sometimes I give them Phostrogen fertilizer
It is good to know in which substrate this plants grow in nature .....p.e. I have seen A.rosea grows in Corsica not in calcy area - only in granite stones, but A.nicaeense grows in calcy areas in southern France .

Please dont forget I live here in the warmest area of Germany -I can grow here many plants which impossibly to grow in other areas

Good luck
Hans

I found Acis autumnale in South Portugal on a small hillside
in small pockets of soil 1 - 5 cm  under water in a small stream
together with Fritilaria sp. They are hardy here in Normandy (-10ºC)
later visiting the same spot in early summer the place was sun baked
and bone dry

Some interesting species in there, Hans.  Lovely!

Thanks for posting.

Apologies to all who get irritated with me dredging up topics from a couple of months ago.  Such nice pics of unusual genus/species that I can't help but comment.  I hope no-one minds too much. ::)
Cheers.
