Caley Show 2010

The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society is holding its Spring Show in the Fletcher Buildings, RBGE, Edinburgh Saturday 27 and 28 March from 11-4 both days. The attached weblink provides a review of last year's show and thus gives an indication of expectations for this year - weather notwithstanding !

Well, despite the appalling weather the growers managed to turn on a reasonable show, indeed there were one or two spectacular plants. Some well kent faces were apparent - Anne Chambers, Stan da Prato, Watt Russell, Billy Carruthers.

The warmth of the hall and the low light levels didn't really assist the showing of the plants however here are a few shots.

2. Shown as "February Gold" but more probably "Tete a Tete". Nial Watson of Ringhaddy Daffodils told me that Tete a Tete is probably the largest cloned organism in the world since there are 100 hectare fields of a single clone in the Netherlands!
3. "Itzim" a popular Div 6 Cyclamineous
4. "Jetfire"
5 & 6 "Little Beauty" - the winning miniature
7. Narcissus x minicycla
8. General display

2. Best bulbous plant - awarded to Watt Russell (Tranent)
3. A nice Corydalis malkensis shown by Christine Russell (Tranent), which was just pipped by husband Watt's plant.
4. Another first place for a good specimen of Saxifrage "Your Love". Watt Russell is rapidly becoming Lothians' answer to Cyril Lafong.
5. Watt's Primula allioni "Ethel Barker"

7. Mike Hicks' winning corydalis (Mike is the local SRGC  Treasurer who started showing only 2 years ago)

Looks like a great show Fraser. It is wonderful to see 'alpines', bulbs, cacti etc in one show, especially for a generalist like me who grows a bit of everything! At a time when many specialised gardening societies are struggling I'd like to see more interaction between them. How about a hardy cactus class at SRGC shows?

Thanks for reporting on the Caley Show Frazer - your photos show that Spring has arrived there in Scotland with all those wonderful Daffodil entries...lots of interesting sections and the one metre show garden is a real challenge (were they assembled in situ?)
