Which animal is a problem in your garden ?
« on: March 31, 2010, 10:04:26 PM »

I have from time to time come across complaints regarding CATS in the garden and thought a thread on it"s own would be worthwhile . ;) ;) ;)

I would suggest that cats are well down the list of animals being a nuisance in my experience.
I would offer up the following for discussion in my order of animals being a pest.

1 Rabbits
2 Moles
3 Mice
4 Dog
5 Badger
6 CAT
7 Fox
8 Muntjak Deer

OVER TO YOU ALL

For me it would be untrained dogs. Dog walkers take their dogs in the field behind our garden and they sometimes come romping through the garden with their big feet trampling plants. Of course, it is my fault because I don't have a six foot fence to keep them out! Police and council just aren't interested.

While the curator at The New York Botanical Garden the most unusual pests were turkey and snapping turtle. Both did damage to not just plants--but the firmament of the garden.

I reckon mice are the biggest danger because you only know they are there after they have done the damage  :'( Pheasants are also bad as they can develop a serious taste for some bulbs and you cann't fence them out. They are tasty though ;) Deer and rabbits can do a lot of damage but you can fence them out.

meow weow and not the drug.

Despite driving snow yesterday and today I saw fresh damage in troughs and raised beds. They have destroted my Ranunculus ficaria collection

Wood pigeons did get a taste for R. ficaria a few years ago. Until the weekend they haven't been back.

In our garden:
1.  Mice
2.  Wood pigeons
3.  Grey Squirrels

On our allotment across the road, it is
1. BADGERS
2. BADGERS
3. BADGERS
(4. Wood Pigeons)
The badgers eat huge quantities of beans, sweetcorn, fruit, plus anything else they can find.  Netting, fences are little use.  Luckily, the badgers can't get into the garden.

Well, I suppose it depends  on whether you are a rural, urban or suburban gardener. As an urban gardener, cats everytime.  I'm with Michael - vermin.
Gerry passed away  at home  on 25th February 2021 - his posts are  left  in the  forum in memory of him.
His was a long life - lived well.

Neighbour's Children:
-cricket balls through glasshouses and cold frames,
-trampling flowerbeds when they climb over the fence to retreive footballs.
etc, etc.....

I wonder why nobody mentioned slugs, in particular Arion rufus, yet!
These little beasts can become a pest!
Clearly my no.1 problem with animals.
Best wishes
Armin
