Disporum 2010
« on: April 14, 2010, 06:05:54 PM »
After winning a first price at St Jean de Beauregard
and the discussion with Patric Blanc about this species
there seems to be a lot of misnaming in this genus
the first question who knows this one

Roland

Thanks Maggi  Disporum megalanthum

I think I have read these flowers have a nice scent....though I can't think where I saw that, or if I am connecting it with the same plant! :-\
Are yours scented, Roland? Those very lovely flowers do look like they might smell good. The large size of the flowers on quite a short plant is most attractive.... I'm jealous  :P

Yes they have a soft scent and they start flowering less as 10 cm high
and are elongating during the flowering period
sadly just a short time lucky the leaves are also decorative
and lasting till the first frost

Do you think the short-lived flowers are just a result of the weather conditions this year or have you noticed this happening other years?

This is as far as I have noticed from the last 5 years (I grow 8 different ones) normal in the genus Disporum
every flower drops down the petals after 2 / 3 days

Roland,

This is the same plant I have. The flowers on mine, originally from Chen Yi, are highly fragrant at close range, but very short flowering season. It is a great plant and semi-evergreen here in eastern Tennessee. Mine are not yet in flower here, but are very close.

Hello Aaron

Do you mean the top one Disporum megalanthum
or the bottom one Disporum megalanthum var.
I bought the white one as D. sessile of course wrong name
the red leaved one as Disporum megalanthum var.

Roland

PS. I try to send you in two weeks a Polygonatum oppositifolium
ex Chen Yi
