Lotherton Hall is perhaps better well known for its extensive bird park (over 200 species and one of europe's largest walk-through aviaries) however for the gardener there is much to hold the interest: designed parkland, a huge orchard (with a growing collection of fruit trees suitable for northern climes), a beautiful Edwardian house and formal gardens.
The estate is owned by City of Leeds council.
Location: Towton Rd, Aberford , Leeds, About 2 miles form Junction 47 on the M1.
Type: Parkland and formal gardens: small eliptical walled garden; herbaceous borders, italinate sunken garden; wildflower lawns; woodland; deerpark; orchard;and the dullest rock garden yet seen (but with some great acers).
Facilities: Shop, tearoom. The Bird garden is free. The only charge is for car parking £3.60 all day.
Information: Poor, nothing about the gardens.
Owners: Leeds council.
Henderson rating: 3/5 (The bird gardens are good) (It's worth a visit to the garden only if you're in the area).

and to think that was the best bit of the rockery. To make amends some shots through acers. Hope this short report has given you something of the flavour of Lotherton Hall.

Many thanks for the report. I'd been to the bird garden but didn't have time to see the garden itself so your pictures were interesting. I liked the 'peony pilgrim'.
