The BD makes a plea for clemency on the part of the Smiths' guitarist, who it seems he rates quite highly.....

Davey, many plants have a very high survival instinct, this is why there is no complaint... it doesn't mean they're not suffering!  ;D ;D

9 hours of induction today. I can no longer refer to my new job by its name. Rules say we are not allowed to mention the store on the internet on chat forums. My days are numbered already  :o

I'm about to go to bed. I'll tell more about the job tomorrow

That seems odd as surely any quality firm is happy to have some free advertising? Only if they were rubbish should they fear such mentions.  ???

I imagine this rule has been implemented to avoid the situation that some firms have found themselves in, Lesley, where employees moan about their employers on their Facebook pagers and suchlike!  :P

Oh, right. I just can't get myself sorted with Facebook, even for grandchildren's sake.

It's a doddle setting up a facebook page, Lesley, and the potential to embarrass the hell out of younger relatives by being on facebook is phenomenal  ;D

Yes, Martin, I'm on Facebook to facilitate contact with friends in the USA. It's a very easy way to share family photographs etc. Also, a very easy way to keep in contact with family when abroad. I am amazed at people who have 2 - 300 friends on Facebook as I imagine it would simply clog up one's page with loads and loads of trivia.

Like Paddy, I'm on Facebook to enjoy photos and contact with family and the hundreds of friends and friends of friends and friends who would like to be your friends is the main thing that puts me off using it!!!!!!!!!!  :-X

I cannot see the appeal of Facebook... it is so easy to email people and if one has lots of photos to share then those with a flickr account or something similar seem able to share well enough with that....... :-\ ::) ???

Even BBC Radio programmes have Facebook pages now.... what on earth is the point of that? Every programme has a web page, one can contact by email, post, text, you name it... what earthly benefit  could there be to add Facebook? I consider it to be a feeble attempt to court the "Yoof" audience at the expense of making cogently produced programming which would appeal by dint of innate quality.........

David Dimbleby announcing that you send Tweet on Twitter after Question Time with a serious expression is worse  :o

I think the whole Mass Media, in-your-face, got to know every detail of your life has become so addictive - a communication drug for which a cure has not yet been found  :-X

There's certainly a great deal of inanity on Facebook. But older users like me tend to use it very differently to the youngsters.

I was very dubious until Ivi joined because all her Slovak friends were using it to keep in touch and share photos from the many places they've wound up around the World, as part of the recent Slovak diaspora. But it is, as Paddy says, very useful for that sort of thing, especially if you have a lot of friends scattered around the World. Previously Ivi used emails and sent photos by email, but now finds Facebook much more convenient.

As someone who works from home, I also find it's good for keeping in touch with friends who also work from home, for the occasional chat, exchanging links to music we each think the others will enjoy on Youtube, arranging to meet up, finding out what events and gigs are on, etc. Very easy to get cut off and isolated when working from home, but Facebook does help people like me to have some contact with others during the day that we wouldn't otherwise be able to have. I guess it's like any other "tool" - everything depends on how you use it.

I did set up a page about 6 months ago and found people I'd never heard of wanting to be my "friend." I got very grumpy about that.

Just ignore them. I guess all means of communication have their downsides - like cold-calling from people trying to sell you stuff on landlines, not to mention the cost of landlines and mobiles. One big plus for Facebook is it's free. It suits some people, and not others. You can also change your privacy settings so only people you know can find you and see your stuff.

I'm loath to condemn any form of communication, however banal it may seem. At least the kids are communicating on some level, even if it is mostly inane stuff. From my expereince, pretty much ALL communication between younger people is banal and inane. They dont need Facebook for that. Just give them a phone.  ;D Hopefully as they get older and gain some interests and some knowledge of the world around them then, like old farts like me, their communications (even on Facebook) will start to get less banal and inane. We can only hope!
