HUUUGE Cyclamen carpet at Wakehurst place
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:21:05 AM »
Hello everyone!

After another long absence gap, I'm back :P

Yesterday I went to Wakehurst place to visit the millennium seed bank and I came across with something that I would describe as the biggest concentration of Cyclamen hederifolium I've ever saw. They were by the thousands. The guide also explained there was another area planted with Cyclamen coum nearby, so these will carry on the show later.
"F" for Fritillaria, that's good enough to me ;)

Good to hear from you again, Mike. Great show of Cyclamen.

By the way, we are off to Madeira in a week's time - any suggestions?

It was quite a while ago Paddy, but I do remember the Botanic Gardens; a small orchid nursery overlooking Funchal and a super garden surrounding a large hotel a few miles to the east of the capital.  We hired a car and toured the mountainous west of the island, you should certainly enjoy a splendid holiday given some fine weather.  We are off to Majorca in a couple of weeks for some autumn sun ... hopefully!!!!  Enjoy your break.

Gentlemen, I apologise sincerely. I really do know, just that the sight was so staggering I must have been totally defragmented. My Holy was Molier than I thought. ;D

Creating your own carpet of cyclamen
« Reply #13 on: October 04, 2010, 10:54:19 PM »
If you look closely at those photos (the enlarged versions), you can see that the cyclamen are growing through a layer of fallen litter. That's what you get when you top dress heavily with oak leaves and don't remove the many twigs that fall with the leaves themselves.

The only impediments to all members of the SRGC having a similar carpet of their own are...
  • Having a big enough space to devote to it.
  • Adequate supplies of oak leaves.
  • The patience to raise the cyclamen from seed and grow them on for a few years before planting out.

Of course, once you've planted out a rather threadbare carpet, the ants will carry the seeds about and take care of planting the rest.

A beautiful show indeed!
