One can purchase money orders in various currencies (or at least in the most commonly-traded ones) at banks here... not so there though?

Lori, several years ago I purchased a money order in US dollars and sent off to a seed company in the US.
6 months later, it was returned to me, the guy told me he couldn't get it cashed anywhere and could I please just send some cash.

Helen, was that a postal money order?  They are available here in Canada
to send to the U.S., but there are complications about cashing them there.

Postal money orders are common for Commonwealth countries -
when I worked in New Zealand I never went to a bank - my savings were
kept at the post office.

You can get international money orders at banks - it costs about $10 to get
one here in Canada - and they are available in various currencies, but not all.
 The Czech banks don't seem to have an agreement with Canada, so money
orders for the CR are written to either German or Austrian banks, which I
guess have branches in the CR.

It was an international money order from a bank, not a postal one.  (One can only get postal money orders in US currency, it seems, not Euros or anything more exotic.)  And yes, it (or both?) both had to be written to a bank in Munich.  

I'll have to look back, but I believe this method was one of the requested methods of payment from both Holubec and Pavelka last year, and I didn't get any indication back that anything was amiss.

Edit:  Perhaps "money order" is not the correct term for this... ?   "Bank draft" may be the actual term (yes, it is)... again, I'll have to look back at my copies, if it is of use to anyone to know for sure.

Bank drafts are available here too, and I suppose in all European countries, for payments in foreign currencies.  They're quite expensive but sometimes the only option.

i ordered last year from both holubec and pavelka, and used cash both times (actually split the holubec order, for the patagonian and regular list, so as to have less cash in one envelope in case anything went wrong)..all 3 payments arrived in good order and timely fashion.
i was nervous sending cash, but the other options i looked at were so much more expensive, that it would have been 1/3 or half the cost-a guaranteed loss of money, vs a possible loss of money if something happened to the cash!

last i knew, neither used paypal, too bad, that would be easy and cheap for everyone involved! does paypal not work there easily?

Unfortunately, Paypal doesn't work in the Czech Republic, or this would be the easy solution.  I have always used cash in a registered envelope and it seems to work OK.

of course it all depends on the size/value of the order, and what your post office charges for registered mail--my orders were fairly modest, something like 30-40 cdn dollars, if i remember correctly, and to even register the letter would be another $10 or more..i took my chances without--so i saved at least $30 on three envelopes, so if i lost another of similar value, i still wouldn't be any farther behind....

PayPal works too, but I am afraid that mostly the older generation here is a little bit conservative as regards „modern” payment method. If I have to send cash in the envelope, I put money in the CD-wrappage and I send them as a registered letter.

Paypal is poorly designed, intrusive and generally unpleasant to use, so like many people I avoid it as much possible.  If that makes me old and conservative then fine

I agree Ashley, I refuse to use Paypal.  In my old workplace, we had never-ending issues using Paypal, which seemed impossible to rectify, so we used other methods of payment for all of our I.T. software and hardware procurements.
