Roland i agree, been given a plant is a wonderful thing because attached with the gift is the person and fond memories and when you show off your plant to anybody else you always mention the chap or lady from were it came(well i do)but when its bought its just a value you can talk about which i find embarrassing   not because I'm ashamed of what i have payed for some things but because i really dont like discussing money. John i was only joking mate.

I have never used ebay so having looked at the (idiotic, looks just like a yellow snowdrop) bids on 'Madeline' why has l**k bid nine times from £30.10 to £71.10 when there were no other bids and then after o**n bid put in another five from £101.10 to £136.10.

Seems much easier to make friends and swap.

I think the way it works is that someone puts in a maximum amount they're prepared to bid up to, and the site then automatically bids for them, so if you outbid them you get a message saying you've been automatically outbid and you have to keep putting in higher and higher bids until you finally outbid the first person's maximum biddable limit. That first person's automatic re-bids don't appear.

Quite so Martin

l**k had put in a high bid and every time someone else put in a bid it was ignored and his bid noted, o**n then obviously put in a higher bid which l**k then trumped with a bid of over £136.

As you say Tony, much better to make friends on this forum, who I have to say are most generous :D

I don't have 'Madelaine' so can't say for sure but from what I've read and pics I've seen, it's pretty much a less impressive version of the much less expensive and more easily obtainable 'Wendy's Gold'. So why?????

Thanks for that explanation, seems a bit devious to me and I would like to see the other bids to at least think they were genuine.

Tony, I think the whole bidding system is designed to encourage high bids (naturally I suppose) and there are various aspects that I don't personally like at all.

Nothing like Wendy's Gold, Martin. Wendy's is a sturdy plant with chunky leaves and quite an intense deep yellow. Madelaine is more delicate both in leaf and flower, leaves paler towards lime-green and the flower with longer outers, and most distinctive, a lime-green ovary and inner marks. A beautiful snowdrop.

This Ebay auction price is a good deal higher than the two Madelaine drops auctioned a year ago for an average price of £53. Doubtless the reason is the old familiar one of two enthusiasts both wanting the plant badly on one of the rare occasions it becomes available, and so the red mist descends. Been there myself. Enjoyed it!

I think this pic is mine but cannot be sure since it predates my newer labelling system. If perchance it belongs to someone else, apologies and thanks.

Okay, well maybe 'Madelaine' looks better in the flesh, but I have to say if I found something like that amongst my seedlings I wouldn't be falling over myself to name it. Maybe as a breeder making selections from a lot of seedlings I tend to be quite critical, and if I was looking for more yellows to name I'd tend to be looking for brighter, stronger, bigger, very garden-worthy yellows rather than smaller and greener yellows. But I guess that's just indicative of me being less a collector and more of a breeder these days.
