south african mysteries
« on: December 18, 2010, 07:32:58 AM »
this is maybe the reverse of the usual issue here--i have names, from a seedlist, but don't know what they refer to--of course they may be typos!

Lachenalia polypedantha
google doesn't give me any hits for this, nor obvious spelling variants-- i tried pedanta pedata..

Ppepodesma orpenii
i tried it with only one p.....

any thoughts? if you know them, any descriptions?

Hi Cohan,

I googled the specific name and not the generic one.

Hi, if in doubt, try the International Plant Name index, maintained by Kew. This is the address http://www.ipni.org/ipni/plantnamesearchpage.do

The plant name query presents you with two options: Quick Search or Full Search. If you are unsure about the name, use the full search. This is how I used it to find your plant name:

Genus:    enter Lachenalia
Species:  enter p%.

Press Search.

In this database, the percent symbol (%) denotes a wild card. The above entry gave 23 results. You could reduce this by entering the second character in the species field i.e. po%. That gave just 2 results, one of them being polypodantha.
