[Meanwhile none of the vacuum-packed seeds from Eddie's have sprouted yet despite four months of cold treatment.  Might I expect them to sprout next year or are they a lost cause?

johnw - only 2-4mm of rain today! Sun cancelled for the next 4 days.]

I could not resist showing you some genuine non-scripta flowering in the wild.  These photos were taken above Aberfoyle in Scotland.  The drooping heads are characteristic of the true species.

H nonscripta grew on the banks of the garden where I grew up, In perhaps half an acre of nonscripta there were around six white bulbs and occasionally a pale blue or pink one, always in the same spot, - these were ones identical to the blue -most pink and white are not.
In the gardens where I work now the Blue Bells are mostly hybreds. However the biggest plants grow in full sun and as one aproaches the woods and darkest corners they resemble far more H nonscripta.
I can always find there, a few flowers of the correct inky blue and drooping habit with the flowers on one side of the stem, amongst the hybreds.
So nature is looking after the British native species -despite what the naturalists claim!

Blebells germinate where undergrowth is cleared to let light onto the ground in the woods. They can appear where there have been none for years.
They will grow in more open areas if there is a higher rainfall or cooler conditions, I would sow them in leafmould outside in a shady spot
