That one is actually called the "common skink" (
Oligosoma polychroma
). It is found from south of Lake Rotorua in the North Island down the South Island except Fiordland but including Stewart Island. Like all New Zealand skinks (there may be one exception?) it is a live bearer. The rainbow skink is not found south of Hamilton, yet! It is illegal to release or even keep it in areas where it is not found.

Well it's certainly very common around here and I have seen very tiny ones sometimes, so presumably they are the live babies, just barely off the bottle and out of nappies.
I guess we'll have to wait for the rainbow skinks to take a hike southwards, of their own volition.
It is depressing to me that while I always knew I knew very little about our native fauna, it is now painfully obvious that I know nothing at all, and all because of an "incomer."

That one stumps me Anthony. You'd better expand a little before Cliff or David come up with something rude.

My new fish. heron had my goldfish last week so though I would treat myself today, picture isn't good was in a hurry, scared the bag would burst.
He didn't look happy in the bag, but is already happily swimming about with his new buddies.

Gosh, you'd pay a fortune for a pot like that!
