David, I just meant Lancashire meat and potato pies as in "meat and potato pies from Lancashire". Not trying to start a war over their origins.  ;D

Martin, I think most, if not all, of the Wars of the Roses were fought outside of Yorkshire and Lancashire and this typifies the general view in those parts as to why "mucky" your own backyard when you can "mucky" someone else's ;D

Ah shucks, I had already enlisted and ordered my uniform!   :D

People who happen to live in Lancashire but lack the "birthright" would be barred from fighting anyway :P

Perhaps a meat and potato pie crust then?

You qualify mate, if there's a new War of the Roses you'll need to get a plane!

My son and his wife, who live in Stafford, are in the Stanley Society and participate in re-enactments of the War of the Roses.  He tells me that the "Yorkists" can take this rather seriously and try to overturn the original outcome of the Battle of Bosworth.  The Stanleys had the right idea, they hung around the outside of the battle and joined the Lancastrians when they saw they were winning.  Not the noblest of actions but very sensible!  As you can see from the pictures they take it seriously.  The weapons and armour are of the period

Super photos, Tom... especially that last one.

I've often wondered about these historical re-enactment events.... must be tough to know from the start that one is on the losing side.... don't you think?  ::)

To think, these men are devoted husbands and fathers with steady jobs and probably affectionate towards their cats/dogs all through the week then go out and try to kill each other at the weekends. ;D On the other hand, I think they do better than having numerous old cars cluttering the driveway, like here. >:(

Yes, I think so, Lesley.... I  think I can hear the hum of the cogwheels of members' minds whirring as they make their choices.... either that or this lamp is on the blink. ;)

I'd expect any Yorkshireman worth his salt to give that a try, they're probably thinking that one day they'll crack it!

Interestingly there's a village called Stanley just outside Wakefield. Can't find any reference to the Stanley family in it's history though. The name is thought to be of Danish origin stan=stone and lean=meadow
