Back in the middle off last year i purchased an amount of Crocus, Allium and Colchicum seed from Marcus Harvey in Tassie,(Aussie).

All of the Crocus and Allium seed germinated earlier however i must admit I'd sort of given up on the two Colchicum sps.....(sorry Marcus     ).

With it snowing off and on since the weekend , bitterly cold winds and water lying everywhere work is at a standstill so I've been at home catching up on finally completing an article for the clubs bulletin 'The Rock Garden' as well as checking the cold frames where i moved all my seed trays to ,at the beginning of this month.

Well I'm happy ,(really happy  ), to report both Colchicum kesselringii and C.luteum sown 9/2010 are just sending out a small radicle.Unfortunately no pics as i don't want to disturb them any further.........

I've certainly not given up on my Colchicum seed and wouldn't ever as some take years, it seems to pull themselves together. My seed is from the same batch as yours Dave but was sown a bit later I think. Lots of others up and coming though.

We have snow on the ground this morning but not much. With luck there will be a lot more tonight and I'll be snowed in and unable to go to work tomorrow morning, leaving at 5.30am. Will warn my boss in case he has to get up early.

Yes i had heard that Roland.Unfortunately the white stuff only lasts for about a couple of hours each time a front comes through.

Yip that's been my experience generally as well ...however when i have sown C.luteum ,(the two ? times i was lucky enough to receive seed via seedxs they failed to germinate--i think i held the pots for 7 or 8 years before tipping the contents on the rock garden without any luck.......

I know the tip about piling snow on the pots is a good one. I've done it before with unexpected and beneficial results but I forgot about it this time until your post Roland, and now it's too late for this lot anyway. But I expect there will be more soon.

What I have also found is that some bulb seeds, presumably the slower ones, take much longer than we might think, to germinate fully. A few years ago I accidentally tipped over a pot of Iris zenaidae and found to my delight that under the grit which had fallen off, were half a dozen seedlings, i.e. the seeds were split and a new root was forming quite well. I carefully put the grit back on top and expected the seedlings to show through in a few days but in fact it was 3 months before the little shoots showed above the gritty surface.

Yay!  I've finished my chipping at last! All now safe in my current favourite piece of equipment, my Vitopod propagator. I'm not on a commission from the manufacturers, but I think it's great. It's big enough to take all my boxes of chipped bulbs at once, the height is adjustable by adding side layers, good ventilation if needed and thermostatically controlled to whatever temperature is required. Best of all, it comes apart and flat-packs when I've finished so it can be stashed in the loft.
The chips are in various little boxes (the most useful size are the cream-cheese cartons with transparent lids) in moist perlite, stacked inside black bin liners to keep out the light.

I'm surprised that none of the other Aussies have mentioned Cadel's win in "La Tour" yet! (And Madame Moderator would surely have noticed )
Perhaps it's simply that they have finally been able to get an early night instead of staying up to all hours to watch what's been happening in daylight on the other side of the world?
