Hi All,

I have been lucky enough to get two tickets for the Glen Chantry open day next Wednesday.  I know that Brian Ellis, David Quinton and Alan_B are going to be there too.   

Just wondering if there are any other SRGC'ers going along?  (Now could be the perfect opportunity for anyone reading this great website, who has never yet posted, to come out and say hi!).

If you don't post a hi online, please do say hi on the day!

I am looking forward to seeing the placement of the snowdrops with other plants as their Summer/Autumn garden is beautiful.  Sue has an eye for the right things together I think.

Best of all Wol believes in selling snowdrops for reasonable prices.

Seriously, I am really looking forward to seeing their collection. I just hope that the weather doesn't spoil the day.

Yesterday I went to one of the snowdrop days (or 'Winter Opening' days) at the Chelsea Physic Garden (mentioned by 'Kent Gardener' on another thread).  The garden is open 10:00-16:00 on 2/3 and 9/10 February http://www.chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk/ .  In the centre of the garden they have a 'snowdrop theatre' in which snowdrops on pots are displayed and a smallish variety of snowdrops and snowflakes around the garden.  The best thing for this snowdrop aficionado was the range of plants availble on the sales table.  I bought 'Trym' for the princely sum of £20, the most I have ever paid for a snowdrop but one that I have been looking to buy and failing to find for several years.  Also 'Hill Poe' for £8 because I remember Paddy recommending it on this forum .

The Chelsea Physic Garden is an incredible oasis of calm in the hurly burly of London (although it was getting quite busy by the time I left).  It also enjoys a benign micro-climate that enables them to grow some very tender plants.

I am so chuffed that my recommendation was taken to heart and I feel perfectly confident that you will not be disappointed. G. 'Hill Poe' is a low-growing snowdrop and a little thought regarding where you are going to place it in the garden will be rewarded. As with yourself, I have enjoyed the Chelsea Physic Gardens, such a contrast to the area in which it is situated. The year before last we went to the Chelsea Flower Show, visited the Chelsea Physic Gardens while there and stayed at the hotel at the Chelsea Football grounds; actually felt quite blue after all that. Remember 'Chopper' Harris anyone? Great favourite of mine.

Those of you heading off to Glen Chantry on Wednesday - I do hope you enjoy it. Wol showed great photographs when in Cork last Thursday night and I cannot imagine you would not find the garden a great place to visit. I'm looking forward to your photographs as you will show the garden from another person's viewpoint. Don't overdo the snowdrops now!

Now Anthony, had you been teaching in Further Education you would have known that Friday is the day when General Studies is time tabled and this means that the General Studies Department works as normal and everyone else has the day off!

I agree Anthony. Why do these events happen on stoopid days? Especially those during the week. I bet most are aimed at the retired enthusiast and not the up and coming grrrr

I am inclined to the opinion that with folks paying over £150 for one snowdrop, then there is not likely to be a problem with those folk not being able to afford a day off work... supposing they do work....for one of these events.   By the time you've bought your 'drops and paid for the tickets, you could have had a decent weekend somwhere where they make chocolate
