Phlox paniculata. Russian selection (not only).
« on: January 18, 2011, 12:41:44 PM »
I'd like to introduce you not alpine but beautiful plants. Most of gardens have them here in Russia. Saying phlox, people mean Phlox paniculata.

The species is very popular here since 1930s. We have had selectionists who created some unique varieties.

I was not phlox fan until visited my friends garden with old large clumps of phloxes. Now I have a collection of about 80 varieties (some collectors have much more). And I love them very much for long and colorful bloom and nostalgic smell.

Blue phloxes. Of course they are not true blue. All of them have some shade of purple. But at the twilight time they change colors to blue and become really fantastic!

'Golubaya Otrada' ('Blue Joy')

'Utro Tumannoe' ('Foggy Morning')

'Fiosin' ('Violet-blue')

Beautiful photographs again Olga.
And that's a stunning range of colour forms, do you have room in your garden for anything else?  ;D

I had no idea there were so many different colours and shapes, the last pic reminds me of geraniums.
They are beautiful.
Olga, do you have problems with mildew on the phlox?

What a wonderful collection Olga. My mother used to grow a dozen or so but I doubt if even a handful are available here now. The scent was delicious.

Olga, I love Phloxes and your pictures are magnificent as usual.
Always hesitated to show Phlox here on the Forum. Thanks for showing!
I have one question: Do you grow the real Phlox Uspech? I mean the one mentioned in the Gagarin Gaganow book, 50 cms. high.
The one offered here and in Germany (and shown in books) is not that one, but grows up to 80 cms.
I have once seen both forms nearby, but the grower discarded all the lower ones because he could not use them for cutting.
I was told that they were imported from Lithuania.
The higher one also goes under the name Laura here  and nut Uspech!but they are the same

Olga,

We grow a few here in Australia as well.  You have some stunning colours.  I've not seen them into the blue-mauves that you show.  Thanks so much for showing us some of your collection. 8)
Cheers.

Olga,
you have a great collection of phlox! :o
I used to grow them when I lived in Boronia (an outer eastern suburb of Melbourne) but they got infected with ?mycoplasma which turned the flowers green.
I saw a lot of them in gardens in Louisiana when I lived there.
cheers

Peter, Ger
:) Yes, I have many other plants. And I stopped to collect phloxes only because of their size. :(

Olga, do you have problems with mildew on the phlox?

Helen,
No I don’t. Me garden is ideal for this species. I have some problems with fungi in wet years but not with mildew.

Luit,
I am too. But I asked Maggi. :)

Gaganov.
Yes, I grow it. And it is true because I got it from Gaganov’s granddaughter with many other sorts. Truly it never grows only 50 sm. Usually it grows up to 80 sm and up to 100 sm in wet years. Laura and Uspech are the same, yes, I have both.

Paul,
Blue phloxes are one of Russian selection lines.

Smoked phloxes.

This is another line of selection. This kinds of phloxes are of different colours and have grey spoys and stripes at their petals/ That names smoke. First smoked phloxes were selected by P.P.Gaganov in 1940s.

'Variacin' (untranslatable, something like 'Changeable')

'Uralskie Skazy' ('Urals Fairy Tails') - on of the first famous Gaganov's sorts

'Churlenis'

'Vrubel'

'Sekret' ('The Secret')

'Dymchatiy Korall' ('Smoked Coral')
