Arctic Film
« on: February 01, 2011, 02:53:26 PM »
We have threads for books and TV/Radio but I can't find one for films.

In October I went to see a Russian film set in the Arctic near the Bering Straights called 'How I ended this summer' (Как я провёл этим летом) at the Leeds International Film Festival. As someone who is unlikely to ever go to the Arctic myself, I enjoyed the experience on the big screen and found it an interesting and enjoyable film too. We are having a spate of Arctic programs on TV at the moment but seeing it on the big screen was really impressive. (I don't get out much, I know ::)).

The film has been steadily winning prizes at international film festivals and won the Golden Eagle for best film in Moscow last week.
You will probably have to go to a Film Festival to see it  - coming up in Dublin, Perth (Australia) and Glasgow - although it may have been released more widely in some countries. It should be on UK release in April but probably only in specialist cinemas.

Don't go to see it if you like only noisy, fast Hollywood blockbuster films - it's for people who like staring at the view 8) 8)

Showing 20th February in Dublin - probably a bit far for you for an evening out, Ashley?

Thanks again Vivian.  Yes a bit of a stretch all right, but I go to Dublin from time to time so may be able to catch it.

This film is now on 'general release' in the UK - in reality only a handful of cinemas in cities over the next 2 weeks.

It is also out in Australia:www.howiendedthissummer.com.au/

An extract from an internet review that sums it up without giving too much of the plot away:

How I Ended this Summer has all the makings of a more conventional cat-and-mouse thriller, and may disappoint anybody who wants, or has been led to expect that kind of film, but it’s a subtler, more surprising and nuanced piece of work than that. It’s a film about character where dialogue has been stripped to the bone, where body language and gesture speak volumes, and the fractious relationship of distrust and lousy communication rings wholly true. It’s a film about temperament and time and territory, clearly shot in arduous conditions in a bleak and breathtaking landscape.
