Early Bulb Day -Dunblane 2011

As we were packing up to come home Angie came past me.... carrying two large bags... singing happily to herself!

 We had a new driver for the coach this year.... he  had packed a reasonable number of  plants for display and the Club plant stall in the boot for the downward trip.... his face was a picture when we all came out laden and nearly filled the whole boot. 
Yes, a fair bit of plant retail therapy went on

Maggie I can see that Joint Rock want to see Lady Alice at a future meeting, but which other one has their card?  Glad you got to meet Richard, who misread his plant ticket

Can I draw attention to the yellow sheet in Maggie's fourth photo ebd2011_i1 below.  The earnest galanthophile had laid his unnamed bulb on the table next to the displays and written hopefully at the top "What is this plant?  Answers below please."

After some hours with nobody willing to venture an opinion, some wag wrote in the middle of the sheet: "Snowdrop ?".

At the very foot of the sheet of paper, in handwriting so tiny I could barely make it out, there was written something about G. elwesii

The tickets seen were for 'Lady Alice',    'I.M.C.' and one other that we'll need to get Ian the Christie kind to remind us of.

Ian Y says he thought that the basic intention was to ask to see all the new plants at a meeting to see them growing outside.
 Ian Christie will know more... but he's up to his eyes in S ndrop events at the moment so we'll need to be patient for him to have time to reply.

If  that really was his problem, no wonder he didn't know when his flight was... or should that be "plight" ?

Had a super day at Dunblane yesterday.  Bacon butties in the morning, followed by soup and sandwiches at lunchtime.... and of course cakes and Jean's cheese scones, yummy!

Oh, and we saw some lovely plants, bought one or two, Maggi managed to capture the evidence of my purchase in one of her overhead shots.

Both speakers were very good, and I now know not to bother trying to grow Daphne petrea again (killed one in just one month last year...)  Ah well...

Here are a few of the plants exhibited.  First a few snowdrops, sorry I didn't get the names of them.  One is this Lady Alice people are talking about I think.  Maybe someone can id them.

Narcissus romieuxii Don Stead

 This little cutie was from Roma... it is not the hybrid that has been registered with the name 'Don Stead' but is another of the hybrids MADE BY Don Stead.  Just a wee delight!

Orchid, sorry didn't get its name but it was beautiful....

 My attempts to photograph this lovely orchid met with awful failure to register the nice markings in the flower.... it had one very large leaf.... I'll show my feeble attempt so you get the idea of the scale of the whole thing. There's a shot of the  label, too, rather flash-  ridden!
 I THINK it says Changniena amoena

Hi just want to say thanks to everyone for making a great day out for all. Day started of with a lovely bus driver full of joy. The weather was a bit worrying as we went down to Dunblane but the minute we got through the doors into the hall the sun was shining. Everyone looked so happy. Plenty plants for sale so thanks to the nurseries that came a long way to sell us some lovely plants. As Maggi said I was singing happily as I went.
Both speakers were great, so much knowledge. And the soup, sandwiches, and CAKES were lovely had a few of them
So thanks again to everyone for a great day out.

Maggi, what on earth did you say to Cyril and me before you took the photo ? 
I got the bulbs of the Don Stead hybrid Narcissus at a Discussion Weekend bulb exchange.  I think it was labelled as 'Don Stead'  but I remembered noticing in the Bulb Log or on the Forum that it was not the named variety so I was hunting around on the Bulb Log on Friday afternoon to make sure I had it correct.  I had in fact changed the label already.  Unusual for me.  I usually mean to change names and forget so need to do the research all over again.
