Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-Mai'
« on: March 14, 2011, 09:19:37 PM »
We have had Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-Mai' in a pot on the patio for 11 years and it is just coming into bloom this year. We bought it to commemorate my mum and wanted something that would be in flower on the anniversary of her death. Only lately having looked at other examplkes of the plant have we noticed that all of them have had green flower stems and the flowers calyxes were also green. Those on our plant are red (see pic below) which leads us to wonder if we really have P. incisa 'Kojo-no-Mai' or an imposter? Can anyone help please?

Picture of the whole plant, David?
From your shot it looks like 'Koju-no-Mai'. But it is better to see the whole plant.

I agree with Uli,one really needs to see the whole plant but from what you have shown the diameter of the branch looks to be too heavy for Ko-jo-no mai.The branch structure is extremely twiggy, particularly at the extremeties.

I think it is a beautiful plant and a lovely way to remember your Mum, whatever the name.

The most distinctive feature, to me atleast, is the zig-zagging of the twigs.

Might the conditions in which the plant has been kept  influence the calyx colour?   Indoors/under cover  bleaching out the red?

It might Maggi but I've seen lots at garden centres, indoor and out, with green calyxes and stems.

As promised here's a pic, not a good one I'm afraid as it was very bright here today(for a change!), showing the whole plant.

I do Michael, wall to wall sunshine today. I've had to moan about something other than the weather today ;D
