Perth Show 2011

Perth was glorious yesterday with a bright, warm spring day.

The benches seemed a little lighter than in previous years, however quality of plants maintained. I don't recall all the details (should have taken a camera or note book!!), however -

Cyril Lafong was awarded the Forrest for a Soldanella villosa 'alba' (I strive to keep plants alive never mind attaining perfection - Cyril is a class apart as there were other similarly great plants from his stable),

Stan da Prato won the Middleton Challenge Trophy for most 1st prize points in Section 1,

Mike Hicks won the Perth Salver for most points in Section 2 [Stan and Mike are becoming something of a double act, as they seem to be winning the cumulative prizes at almost all of the shows - when Mike gets into section 1 next year fur may fly!],

Stan da Prato was also awarded the Cox Trophy for best rhododendron,

Susan Band won lots of prizes including Masterton Trophy (best primula) and Duff Pize (best section 2 plant),

Graham Catlow was awarded a Certificate of Merit for a pea in section 2 (other Merit awards went to Cyril Lafong, John Lee and I think Susan Band),

and RBG Edinburgh were awarded a Silver for their exhibit,

Trade stands included Harperley plants who had travelled up from County Durham - good to see different stock/nurseries,

and the Fig flapjacks deserved a Forrest.

It wasn't so much that I won lots of prizes, it was the Primula maximowiczii that won all the prizes. I only had that and a Dodecatheon entered, both of which I had dug out of the ground the day before and put in newly bought pots. Not much energy expended. Pleased though

if only we could get different nurseries  I would like to see various nurseries on rotation coming here so we could get different plants.

Mark, the problem is not the selection of nurseries, the real problem is not  having enough disposable cash to buy all the plants that we want from the nurseries that are there.

I hope no one minds if I start with mine (Lathyrus vernus) - you can not believe how amazed I was to see this next to one of my plants. Especially as it is one that is so easy to grow. could have put this in the 'I'm So happy' thread

Great show. Well done Graham, who said you can't be up there with the masters.
Thanks for suggesting a visit to Branklyn gardens it was well worth the visit. A whole day looking at wonderful plants 
Was busy planting all my new purchases today.
