running out of camera memory on holiday?

A friend recently went to Turkey on a birding holiday. He took 1000s of photos but every night he had to delete photos to save/make space.

I know someone who went to the Harrowgate show and stayed in England a day on either side. S/he went with only one battery and a small memory card. No need to guess what happened.

It all sounds wonderful Mark, but imagine the following scenario ...

A once in a lifetime trip to Bhutan, three weeks of magnificent plants, wildlife and scenery - all captured with your brand new Samsung SH100, all sent to your hard drive back in Northern Ireland and all ready to view upon your return.

a) You arrive at your house and notice that your door has been forced - your computer is missing ... !!!
b) Power cuts or disruptions have affected your computer system ... !!!
c) The damn (brand new) Samsung SH100 fails on it's very first assignment ... !!!

Give me multiple memory cards, DVD backups and a laptop (if practical) EVERY time.

As many of you know, I am to holidays what fish are to bicycles.... but I have a comment, nonetheless!  Is it possible to have a small portable hard-drive that one can download the memory card to, as needed? Apologies if my grasp of the technology is so pathetic that this is not possible.

A camera that can do what Mark says seems very useful.
In ye olde days of film, of course, one still needed to carry batteries for flash etc and oodles of film... perhaps we are getting too  relaxed about digital capabilities?

Hi Maggi,
There are numerous types of mini-hard drive that can accept memory cards, sticks, etc.  I used to take an X-Box to the Dolomites and backed up all my images every evening before dinner - quite a simple and trouble-free exercise. As a space saving exercise (cheap airline weight limits have a lot to answer for), I now carry multiple memory cards and my laptop (which I need anyway to present lectures to the guests).  Each used card is backed up to the laptop each evening, but not wiped. When a card (usually to maximum of 8Gb) is full I simply store that away as a very portable back-up to the laptop.  When we toured the States last summer I also backed up to DVD's as the content was so precious. I seem to recall that I used nine memory cards of various sizes during our three week tour.

The small 10 inch laptops are excellent for this sort of thing; they don't weigh much more than a kilo, have battery life of ~8 hours, and cost less than £200 with a 160GB hard drive.

I am currently in Sicily and have been away from home for around 6 weeks so far. I hate to think how many photos I have taken.   I have with me a small HP Netbook, which I can store both my,  and my husband's photos. It has a built in card reader for our cameras so no extra cords.It is small enough for me to carry around in my hand bag.  I then back up onto a 500Gb very small hard drive, which I keep in a separate place. I then delete off the card.  The Netbook means I can also check email (much needed when flights are changed at a days notice - we would have missed one), and to find something on Google maps  or more info on things that we are going to.

I do  a lot of deleting when I have them on the computer, so I don't have too many multiples of things. Some years ago I had a portable hard drive which was OK but you could not preview what you had downloaded so ended up with a lot of unnecessary stuff.

Cliff, do you keep all yours cards, hard drives  etc in different places, in case the worst happens?
