You were quite correct in your assumption, rob... those are the seed pods.
I had almost the same question today at the Beechgrove Potting Shed: A lady was tidying the dead leaves on her Crocus and noticed what she thought looked like buds, just appearing at ground level. She was intrigued to learn those were seed heads and she is now looking forward to self-sown increase in her crocus over time.
That being said, I cannot say the we have noticed much in the way of self-sown seedlings from our Colchicums, in spite of fat pods!
